The round trip from Björkliden to Rallarkyrkogården is 8 km long and marked with white and blue markings on tree trunks and signs. Hiking trails and seasonal tours

The route can be extended in the area around Björkliden with a 3 km round trip to the church in Tornehamn. This additional distance can be planned separately. Access to the nearby cultural heritage site may vary depending on conditions; check the conditions if you plan to make this detour.

The Rallar cross-country ski trails begin at the signpost for Rallarvägen opposite the railway station in Björkliden; conditions are seasonal. Hiking trails near Hotell Fjället range from peaceful forest walks to challenging summit ascents. The choice therefore comes down first to the activity you want: seasonal cross-country skiing or hiking with a wide variety of tour options.

Traces of railway history

Tornehamns kyrkogård, also known as Rallarkyrkogården, is located in the area around Björkliden. The cemetery was established for the people who died during construction of the Malmbanan ore railway; its history is therefore directly linked to the construction of the railway. Gammelgården is another historic site. It is one of the engineers’ houses built in 1906 that still stand in the village. The house was a private residence until 1926; SJ's Vilohemsförening then acquired it and made it accessible to its members.

Nature and other activities

Silverfallet, a waterfall in a ravine that flows into Torneträsk, is located nearby. Kåppasjokkgrottan, one of Sweden’s longest cave systems, lies above Björkliden. The cave stays at plus 8 °C year-round. Björkliden is also home to Sweden’s northernmost golf course.

A guided historical hike in Björkliden takes four hours through barren mountain landscapes and along the Navvy Trail; seasonal availability may change. Mountain bikes are available for hire from June to October, though dates and availability may change. A dog sled ride for groups of 2 to 8 people lasts 2.5 hours; details of this activity may also change. In terms of duration, the guided hike takes one and a half hours longer than the dog sled ride.

SJ operates the train service between Stockholm and Björkliden; check the current timetable before travelling. Björkliden railway station is about 1 km from Hotell Fjället.
