Vuollerim can be explored through its nature, archaeology, and architectural history: rare plants and fungi sit alongside traces of Stone Age settlements, while historic buildings and art offer further local points of interest. When planning, check the specific access routes, seasonal dates, and visitor conditions.

Forest landscapes, plants, and hiking trails

Ekopark Vuollerim lies at the confluence of the Stora Luleälven and Lilla Luleälven rivers. Its natural features include sun-exposed lichen heaths with rare fungi such as Goliatmusseron, Smultronkantarell, and Taigataggsvamp. The Vuollerimravinerna Nature Reserve features a varied forest landscape along the steep slopes of the Luleälven, shaped by deeply incised stream ravines.

Tussilagolunden is a deciduous-forest ravine in Vuollerim. Coltsfoot grows there, which is unusual in the inland areas of Upper Norrland. A boardwalk and signs lead to the site where the plant is found. The route to Tussilagolunden is signposted from the Porsi power station; a parking area is nearby.

There are five hiking trails of varying difficulty. The shortest is 2 km long, and the longest is just over 4 km. All hiking trails in Vuollerim start at the northern end of Gästgivarestigen. If you are planning a particular hike, check local trail information for updates.

Archaeology, buildings, and art

Ekopark Vuollerim contains excavation sites of settlements where people lived 6,000 years ago. A boardwalk leads to one excavation site; several signs provide information about archaeological discoveries in the area. A Stone Age settlement was also excavated at Älvnäset, near Vuollerim. This marked the beginning of the history of the Vuollerim 6000 år Museum in the 1980s.

Gamla Telegrafen was built in 1904 as a single-storey wooden building housing the telephone exchange and a residence. This well-preserved building from around the turn of the century is an important link in Vuollerim’s history. Objects and photographs from different periods have been assembled in the house. To visit the museum at Gamla Telegrafen, you can contact the Vuollerim local heritage association.

Vuollerim Church also offers a tangible connection to the area’s history: it was inaugurated in 1958. The church houses the altarpiece “Livets väg” by Lennart Segerstråle.
