Porjus combines the history of power station construction with striking buildings and named trails. The Porjus power station is a National Romantic brick building with a tower and a gold crown. The trails and destinations in Porjus point to different historical periods: Rallarstigen served as a porter trail during power station construction from 1910 to 1915; Porjustallen is believed to be 700 to 800 years old.

Power Station History and Rallarstigen

The large power station building houses a museum with exhibitions about the early era of power generation and the history of the power station. The power station is closed to visitors until further notice.

Rallarstigen takes you back to the period when the power station was being built: it was used as a porter trail from 1910 to 1915. It was inaugurated on June 12, 1994, with signs, painted trail markings and new wooden boardwalks. Its use and inauguration mark different chapters in the trail’s history: one belongs to the power station’s construction phase, the other to the trail’s later inauguration.

Porjus Church and Its Construction History

Porjus Church also tells the story of a building put to a new use. Originally, it was a barracks owned by Vattenfall; later, it was donated to the parish and converted into a church in 1928. The wooden building has a rectangular nave. The bell tower dates from 1921, an earlier period than the conversion into a church. The nave is the elongated main space of the church building.

The power station and the church showcase different building styles: a National Romantic brick building with a tower and a gold crown, and a wooden building with a rectangular nave. Together with the stories of their respective uses, the buildings offer two different insights into Porjus.

Circular Trail and Access to Porjustallen

Hälsoslingan Porjusberget is a circular trail about 2.0 kilometres long. This distance includes the side trips to Porjustallen and the southern summit. Porjustallen is believed to be 700 to 800 years old.

Porjustallen can be reached from Porjus via Postgatan. After about 1.6 kilometres uphill, there is a car park or viewpoint; from there, a short forest trail leads to the tree. Trail details may change; check local information before setting out.

Marching, Games and Golf

Rallarmarschen is a long-standing march between Gällivare and Porjus; its history spans several decades. If the march is the reason for your trip, check the dates for your travel year. Kraftbyggarland is a seasonal outdoor play offering. Check in advance whether it will be available during your visit. Porjus Golf Club has nine holes with artificial-turf greens.
