An information sign at Vuoggatjalme indicates that you have crossed the Arctic Circle. The village lies on the Arctic Circle in an unspoiled mountain landscape. In summer, several hiking trails pass through Vuoggatjalme; in winter, cross-country ski trails, snowmobile routes and ice fishing are among the options. When planning, the differences between marked and unmarked sections and between tours on foot, on the water and in the snow are particularly worth noting.
Hiking trails: marked sections and summit hikes
The Silvervägen/Guoledisjávrre–Guijaure–Vuoggatjålme hiking trail is 52 km long. Another marked hiking route runs through Sieldutvagge: it starts in Vuoggatjålme, passes through Juoron and continues to Mavas. On the hiking trail to Gujjávrtjårro, the first 16 km are clearly marked; after that, an unmarked hike leads to the summit. When choosing a route, it is therefore important to note that the trail marking does not continue all the way to the summit.
The Jurun–Vuoggatjålme hiking trail also starts in the village. A bus runs from Arjeplog to the Polcirkeln stop on Route 95 (Silvervägen); Vuoggatjalme is 3 km from this stop. Check the timetable before travelling. Summer activities also include scenic helicopter flights and flights that drop guests off in the mountains so they can hike back.
Ski trails and snowmobile routes
Two groomed cross-country ski trails run near the farm: one is 2.5 km long and the other 4.4 km. Grooming may vary by season. Snowmobile routes lead from Vuoggatjålme towards Tjidtjak/Gardaure, Tjådnejaureh, Tjärnberg and Arrajaure, as well as up Sildutdalen. They are not always groomed; check conditions before setting out.
A snowmobile route from Vuoggatjålme to Laisstugan passes under Polcirkelbron, then follows Nasaleden before branching off towards the hut. Another route follows Sieldutjåkkå through Sieldutvagge to Mavasleden. The snowmobile rental service offers several models for deep-snow riding and travel on marked trails; since the models may change, it is best to check the current selection. The Arctic Circle Snowmobile Tour also starts in Vuoggatjålme and takes place in a high-alpine mountain landscape. Check the latest tour details in advance.
Mountain lakes, boats and fishing
The lakes around Vuoggatjålme are home to Arctic char and trout and are suitable for ice fishing. This includes the lake just below the farm. Boats can be rented at the farm and at selected mountain lakes. Guoletisjaure and Ikkesjaure are fishing waters associated with Vuoggatjalme for day trips; both are best reached by boat. Mountain scenery and fishing are the main attractions at Guoletisjaure.
East of Vuoggatjålme lies Skidnakjaure, which has good stocks of trout and Arctic char. A protected area also extends eastwards towards Sielutdalen. Together, the fishing waters and protected landscape offer different points of interest alongside the hiking and winter routes, without requiring any one type of tour to be the main focus.
Traces of history and practical information
The area around Guijaure contains archaeological traces of old settlements, hearths, trapping pits and at least one older grave. Guijaure is a historic meeting place for reindeer herders, hunters and fishers and is also linked to the transport routes to the mine at Nasafjäll, which began operating in 1635. Another historical trace leads to Vuoggatjålme: refugees rested here for a few days before continuing their journey in stages along Sädvajaure towards Sädvaluspen.
For a meal, the Vuoggatjålme restaurant serves homemade food made with fresh ingredients from farms in Norrland. Nearby, Guijaurestugan has a room for day visitors as well as two lockable twin rooms. Check availability before including these rooms in your overnight plans.
