Hovmantorp combines a distinctive manor landscape with local history and the waterscape of Rottnen and Fibbleå. The historic surroundings also tell a story of early industrialisation: watercourses could once power waterwheels and turbines, while the development of manors in Småland was an important part of regional development. The town therefore offers several different themes for a trip: you can focus separately on architectural and cultural history, a cultural heritage trail, and experiences by the water. Hovmantorp has a railway station on the line between Växjö and Kalmar. If you are travelling by train, check the timetable for your travel dates.

Manor landscape and local history

Hovmantorp’s manor landscape is known for its many mature trees, especially oaks. On the manor estate stands an oak with a diameter of almost 2.5 metres; it is the largest tree in the district. Hovmantorp Manor and the surrounding landscape form a well-preserved and important example of the development of manors in Småland and their relationship to the emergence of early industrialisation. The present-day industrial site also represents this development. As a manor landscape and cultural environment, Hovmantorp is of interest at district level.

Hovmantorp Church, inaugurated in 1847, is part of the town’s history. Many older buildings have also been preserved in Hembygdspark. Hovmantorp’s first power station was built further downstream on the river in 1905. Together, these places and historic milestones point to different aspects of Hovmantorp’s development: from the manor landscape to religious architecture and early electricity generation.

Fibbleå, Rottnen and the cultural heritage trail

From Gasjön in the north to Rottnen, the ground drops by just over 40 metres along the Fibbleå over a distance of five kilometres. This creates numerous rapids and waterfalls. In the past, they could power waterwheels and turbines. Fibbleå is Rottnen’s largest inflow. The lake is also important to the natural landscape: in Kronoberg County’s nature conservation programme, Rottnen is classified as Class 2, meaning very high natural values.

Inaugurated in 2015, Fibbleåns vandringsled is a cultural heritage trail around Hovmantorp in Lessebo Municipality. It offers a dedicated way to explore local history on a circular route, while the Fibbleå, with its gradient and waterfalls, illustrates the historic use of hydropower. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider both the cultural landscape and the waterways as distinct ways of experiencing the town.

Gökaskratt bathing area is right by Lake Rottnen. The Rottnen, Gökaskratt-Hovmantorp bathing area has a long, fixed bathing jetty and a sandy bottom. At Gökaskratt campsite, Paddelkompaniet rents out two canoes for a few hours or a full day, so you can explore Rottnen, one of the largest lakes in the area. You can choose a rental period to suit either a shorter outing or a full day on the water. Check canoe availability before your trip.

Getting here and practical amenities

For travel by train, Hovmantorp station is a useful point of reference; it is on the line between Växjö and Kalmar. There are six charging stations on Parkgatan, between Folkets Hus and Allhallen. They are accessible 24 hours a day, year-round. As facilities can change, check their status before your visit. The station and charging-station locations offer different points of reference for planning your journey, without implying any particular connection or travel time.

Hovmantorp IP also offers a specific option for sports activities: the facility has two 11-a-side grass pitches and one 11-a-side artificial turf pitch. Pitches can be booked for training and matches; check availability before your trip. Alongside cultural and landscape attractions, these sports facilities can be another option to include in your plans.
