Orrefors brings together the history of glass, historic industrial buildings, a hiking trail and the chance to try glassblowing. Several specific highlights can help you plan your visit: the collection at the museum, the industrial heritage in its buildings and a 9.5-kilometre route. These themes can help you decide whether to focus on glass culture or outdoor activities.

Glass History at the Museum

The Orrefors Museum is located in the centre of Orrefors. Its exhibition hall displays a historic collection of glass from Orrefors glassworks. Next to the museum is a glass shop selling books and unique second-quality glass objects from the heyday of Orrefors glassworks. The distinction is practical: the museum is about the historic collection, while the shop focuses on books and glass objects.

Orrefors is one of the glassworks in the Kingdom of Crystal whose innovative and experimental design language has gained international recognition. Orrefors is also one of four areas in Nybro Municipality designated as being of national interest for cultural landscape management. The two designations emphasise different things: one concerns the cultural landscape, the other the design language of the glassworks.

Historic Buildings and Craftsmanship

The Hammarsmedjan, together with its associated spark furnace and old glassworks building, has been a listed building since 2007. Buildings around Hammarsmedjan, including the spark furnace and water channels, date from the 1840s. After volunteer work and extensive renovations, Hammarsmedjan reopened as a living museum in 2014. Other historic traces preserved in Orrefors include a waterwheel and the forge’s long wooden buildings.

At Orrefors Park, visitors can try glassblowing, and there is also a well-preserved industrial setting. This makes a difference when choosing what to focus on: the museum and shop offer historic objects, Hammarsmedjan features buildings and technology, and glassblowing is a hands-on activity.

Hiking Trail and Local Paths

The Orrefors hiking trail is 9.5 kilometres long. Paths in the surrounding area, for example, are accessible with a pushchair. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between the length of the named route and the paths around it.

Plan for a Guided Tour and a Break

The association at Hammarsmedjan offers guided tours and operates the machinery. As the visitor programme may change, it is recommended that you check the latest dates in advance.

The Glassblower Café & Crêperie serves savoury and sweet crêpes, as well as coffee, fika and other drinks. As the menu and services may change, check the current offer before your visit.
