Målerås is best explored through its glass art and the landscape surrounding the town. At the exhibition hall of Målerås Glasbruk, you can view and buy limited-edition art glass and one-of-a-kind pieces. There’s also a tour featuring designer Mats Jonasson, the chance to watch glass being shaped and other craft activities. Walking and cycling trails offer a different focus for your visit.
Glass Art and the History of the Glassworks
The exhibition hall brings together a range of works: alongside one-of-a-kind pieces, it displays limited-edition art glass. You can do more than just look at the pieces—you can also buy them. This gives your visit a tangible connection to the objects, while the glassworks setting also has cultural and historical significance.
Målerås is one of six well-preserved glassworks settings in Nybro Municipality. The glassworks setting in Målerås is considered to be of national cultural and historical interest. If you’re interested in the cultural side of the town, you can take in both individual art glass pieces and the history of the glassworks setting.
Tour, Glassmaking and Your Own Piece
The “Guided Tour with Glass House Show” begins in the gallery with a retrospective of designer Mats Jonasson. This gives it a different focus from a visit to the exhibition hall: the tour begins with a look back at Jonasson’s work.
At Målerås Glasbruk, you can also take part in a 30-minute glassblowing session led by a master glassblower. During the session, you’ll make your own crystal object. Check booking options and seasonal availability before your trip. At the Open Glass House, visitors can watch glowing glass being shaped into sculptures; check the seasonal details here, too, before your trip.
Crafts and Other Places to Visit
At the House of Crafts, seven craftspeople showcase their handicrafts under one roof, alongside the Crystal Shop. So in addition to the art glass, you can also see crafts on display during your visit. Outside the factory is the Children’s Kingdom of Crystal, a glass-themed park with a creative glass playground and a miniature glassworks smelting house.
Tåget Målerås is right next to the facilities at Målerås Glasbruk and is part of a visit there. There are also four parking spaces just outside Målerås Glasbruk. Check whether they’re available for your visit before you travel.
Walking and Cycling Trails Around Målerås
The Framtidsleden walking trail passes through Målerås. Nearby, Gråstensmon is approximately 7 kilometres long and is considered moderately difficult. A shorter 2-kilometre loop around Lake Långegöl runs just outside Målerås along Route 31. The two trails therefore differ clearly in their stated lengths; Gråstensmon also has a stated difficulty level.
The Gråstensmon landscape in the surrounding area features a stagnation moraine, as well as wetlands with large transition mires and floating mats. Interesting flora is another of its described features. Several cycling trails also start from Målerås. This gives you options for your stay, whether you want to focus on glass culture or explore the trails in and around Målerås.
Plan Your Stay and Accommodation Search
If you’re looking for a hotel or other accommodation for a stay in Målerås, start by deciding which visits are most important to you. The experiences at Målerås Glasbruk include the exhibition, tour, glassblowing session and the chance to watch glass being shaped; the walking and cycling trails offer a different focus. Then check the location of each accommodation option against the visits you’re planning. When preparing for your trip, also note the booking and seasonal information for the glassblowing session, as well as the seasonal details for the Open Glass House.
