Hultsfred offers a cultural and historical focus that unfolds through music, railways and local history. There is also a walking trail by Lake Hulingen, a bathing spot and nature within the municipality. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing lasting local stories from activities with dates that may change.
Music history on site
Hultsfred – The Walk runs through the historic festival grounds by Lake Hulingen. Around 40 information boards form a loop starting from the Klubben site. This walking trail connects music history with a specific place. The “Hultsfred – The Walk” app expands on the theme with music, film clips, facts and augmented reality experiences that can be enjoyed on site in Hultsfred. App details may change; if you plan to use the digital content, check the latest information in advance.
The Svenskt Rockarkiv aims to collect the history of Swedish popular music. Complete articles can be consulted at the archive’s premises in Hultsfred. If you are planning a visit, it is best to check visiting arrangements in advance. A description from August 2026 calls the Hultsfred – The Walk of Fame a permanent monument to the music history created in Hultsfred. The walking trail, archive, app and monument each offer a different perspective, from a tour and a collection to digital interpretation.
Buildings and bygone eras
Hultsfred’s local heritage park showcases the history and culture of bygone eras. All the buildings were moved there from other locations. Their interiors mostly reflect the conditions typical of the period when each was inhabited, particularly in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Two historical perspectives are therefore presented side by side: the houses’ present location and the periods of life that their interiors are based on.
Railways and routes
The narrow-gauge railway between Hultsfred and Västervik is 71 kilometres long and has a track gauge of 891 millimetres; the section opened in 1879. The 71 kilometres refer to the route length, while 891 millimetres is the track gauge, or the distance between the rails. The Smalspåret Hultsfred–Målilla route is listed as 13.0 kilometres long and starts at Hultsfred railway station.
The railbike route from Hultsfred to Målilla has a rest stop by Lake Hesjön. If you are planning to take this route, check details about facilities and operating dates in advance. A hiking trail starts at Kalvkätte farm in Hultsfred, so its starting point is also clearly identified.
Water, nature and dates
For the 2026 bathing season, the Hulingen bathing spot in Hultsfred was rated “excellent quality” based on the 2025 classification. The municipal nature reserve Alkärret is also located within Hultsfred Municipality. Its marshy forest habitat is associated with around 40 species that are more or less threatened. This approximate number refers to the species associated with this habitat.
Since 2010, Hultsfreds FK has organised Hultsfred Marknad. The specific dates may change, so check in advance whether the market is taking place during your travel dates. This lets you combine the historical attractions with an event, if one is important to your trip.
