In Virserum, contemporary art and historic memorial sites meet paths through a landscape of forests, hills and lakes. This lets you give culture and outdoor activities different priorities when planning your stay, rather than packing every experience into one itinerary. The art gallery, the Dacke monument and the narrow-gauge railway each offer a distinct focus; the walking area and hiking trails provide another way to spend time outdoors.

Art, architectural history and remembrance

Virserum Art Gallery opened in 1998 and has 1,600 m² of exhibition space showcasing contemporary art. Pappershuset, the gallery building, has a vaulted roof made of glulam arches and diffused light. This means the building’s form and lighting are also presented as subjects in their own right, alongside the art.

A statue of Nils Dacke, created by Arvid Källström, stands in Virserum’s market square. Dacke led the uprising against Gustav Vasa; the monument was erected in 1956 in memory of him and the events of the Dacke uprising. Another historic trace is the narrow-gauge railway between Västervik and Virserum: it was the first railway line in Sweden to be designated a listed monument.

Dacketräffen is also part of the town’s events calendar. The 2024 event took place in Virserum in early August and attracted motorcycle enthusiasts from across Sweden and Europe. The date may vary from year to year, so check the dates for the event you’re interested in before travelling.

Walks and hiking trails

Länsmansgårdsängen Nature Reserve lies northwest of Virserum, on the shore of Lake Virserumssjön. It is a popular walking area with several paths and benches. For a walk focused on a specific natural setting, it offers a different emphasis from the cultural sites in town: here, paths lead to the lakeshore, and benches are among the facilities described.

If you’re planning a longer hike, you can compare the Virserumsleden and Hjortleden by length. The two trails share the first 6 km before splitting. Virserumsleden is about 9 km long, while Hjortleden is 19 km. Both pass through forest and hilly terrain and by lakes. The shared section and different total lengths can help you choose a route; check the trail conditions locally, as routes and conditions may change.

Seasonal activities and your stay

You can downhill ski at Dackestupet; operations are seasonal and may change. There are also mountain biking trails that start at the top of the ski slope. The starting point has parking, a skills park and fire pits. This offers a different focus for your activities than a walk by the lake or a longer hiking route. Check the current trail conditions and seasonal operations before your visit.

The activity park in central Virserum has seating areas, boules courts and a barbecue area. Several areas are adapted for wheelchair users. These facilities make the park another option for spending time outdoors, with a different emphasis from trails through forest and hilly terrain.

When planning your stay, you can first decide whether to focus on art and history or on trails and seasonal activities. The differences between a lakeside walk with benches, hiking trails of about 9 or 19 km, and seasonal activities at Dackestupet give you specific points of reference. This makes it easier to shape your planned stay around the things you actually want to experience.
