Berga can be explored through two themes: cycling routes with clearly stated distances, and a history connected with the railway and old transport routes. When planning, it helps to distinguish short activity routes from a longer cycling tour. There are also several cultural points of interest: in the town, at the church and railway station, and in the surrounding area.

Choose cycling routes by length and type

Lövhällängsrundan is a 1.8-kilometre activity route in the Lövhälläng area of Berga. There are twelve different signs along the route. At Trädgårdsgatan 37, there are illuminated exercise trails measuring 1.5 and 2.5 kilometres. The distances make it possible to compare their lengths directly; at the same time, these are different offerings: an activity route and exercise trails.

As a longer option, the red cycling route, RÖD SLINGA, runs from Berga via Basebo, Bohult, Släthult and Kalvenäs, and back to Berga. The entire route is 29 kilometres long. This makes it quite different from the shorter routes in town. Conditions on RÖD SLINGA may change; check them before setting off.

The suggested cycling tours around Berga alternate between gravel or asphalt roads and easy forest paths. Responsibility for road maintenance and path standards also varies. Another cycling tour north of Berga passes through a cultural landscape and offers beautiful views of Älgsjön. Views and trail conditions may vary depending on the season.

Railway, country road and local history

Berga’s development is connected with the establishment of the railway in the late 19th century. The railway station complex includes a well-preserved station, an engine shed and old industrial buildings. It therefore provides a tangible connection to the town’s railway history. Another historic transport link is the old country road through Berga: traditionally called Kungsvägen, it was the overland route between Kalmar and Stockholm. Together, the railway and country road point to different routes that played a part in Berga’s history.

Berga kyrka is also a historic point of interest. It was completed in 1959 and inaugurated on 12 December of that year. The church is in Högsby parish and is open daily from 7:00 am to 4:30 pm. The inauguration date and daily opening hours provide a specific time frame if you plan to include the church in your visit.

Cultural venues and rural heritage in the surrounding area

Café 3 århundraden is housed in an old school in Berga and serves homemade pastries. The café also has an antiques shop with a flea market section. If you plan to visit, check the opening hours in advance. Berga Bio & Teater is run by a local community association; it is also home to Emådalens Filmstudio. Alongside the historic sites, there are therefore distinct cultural options to explore: a café with an antiques section and a community-run cinema and theatre.

North of Berga, by Älgsjön, lies the early 20th-century estate setting of Elsabo. The Berga area is also home to Skruvshult, with an older village centre and two relatively well-preserved farmsteads. The two places have different character: Elsabo is an estate setting by the lake, while Skruvshult is associated with its village centre and farmsteads. Together, they add rural settlement patterns and building traditions to the area’s history.

When choosing a focus for your stay, it is useful to weigh the themes against each other: the shorter routes offer different distances from the 29-kilometre cycling route, while the railway station, church and historic transport routes offer a cultural-historical perspective on Berga. The café and cultural venues add to these interests, while nearby places offer further points of interest in landscape and architectural history.
