Aneby can be planned around several distinct highlights: trails of varying lengths, birdwatching by the water, a waterfall, and historic architecture. When planning your day, it is worth distinguishing between the scale and character of the different offerings.

Choose trails by length and landscape

The Målsånnaleden is about 16 kilometres long. In the centre, it follows walking and cycling paths, then mainly forest roads and wider trails. The routes therefore differ not only in length but also in their sections: they include paths in the centre as well as forest roads and wider trails.

The Anebyleden is part of the Smålandsleden and runs for about 78 kilometres through the entire municipality of Aneby. It is therefore a much longer option than the Målsånnaleden; the stated distance for the Anebyleden refers specifically to the municipality. For a cycling trip, Ralången runt is a good option: it is about 25 kilometres long and combines a variety of nature and cultural experiences.

The Svartåleden has a different focus. It follows the banks of the Svartån through built-up areas and green spaces, offering insights into local history and natural habitats. While Ralången runt brings nature and culture together, the Svartåleden combines these themes with a route along the river and through different surroundings.

Aneby has a train connection via Aneby Resecentrum. From there, a connecting trail leads to the Anebyleden. If you are planning your journey and hike together, you can take this connection into account when finding your way.

Water, nature and birdwatching

The Furulid nature reserve lies directly southeast of the built-up area of Aneby and covers 94 hectares. The reserve has a lit running track with exercise stations. At Anebysjön, which is in the vicinity of Aneby, walking paths connect the lake with the town. There is a birdwatching tower in the northeastern part of the lake; there is also a floating jetty and a shelter with a barbecue area.

Another place to watch birds is Bredestadsdalen, on the eastern edge of the built-up area. The observation platform offers views of reed beds and the southern inlet of Lake Ralången. Further east of Aneby, in the wider region, lies the Hyllingen nature reserve. The lake there is important for resting and breeding birds. The observation points therefore have different surroundings: at Anebysjön, there is a tower in the northeastern part of the lake, while Bredestadsdalen has a platform overlooking reeds and the inlet.

Stalpet is a 20-metre-high waterfall and is considered the highest waterfall in southern Sweden. Stalpets Café och Hantverk is next to the waterfall. In the garden overlooking the waterfall, you can enjoy coffee and buy local handicrafts. A staircase leads down on both sides of the waterfall.

Cultural history and winter conditions

Åsens by, Sweden’s first cultural reserve, established in March 2000, is located in the municipality of Aneby. Today it comprises three farms with well-preserved buildings typical of the 19th century. Aneby kyrka offers a different architectural feature: its new church space was inaugurated in 1997 and has an octagonal shape. A digital tour of the interior is available.

There is also a specific condition for winter activities: there are exercise trails in central parts of Aneby and in Frinnaryd; when winter conditions are suitable, ski trails are also prepared there. This option therefore depends explicitly on the prevailing winter conditions.
