A processional cross from Limoges, a church on the lakeshore and several trails with specified lengths give Sandhem different points of interest for a stay. Events at Sägnernas Hus and a bathing area on Lake Sandhemssjön add to the appeal. When planning a visit, you can weigh up the history of the church and trails, activities in forest and cultural landscapes, and the dates of events.
Church, art and local heritage farm
Sandhem Church was inaugurated in 1841. It is the fourth church in Sandhem and the third to be built on the same site. The 19th-century building is in the Empire style and stands on the shore of Lake Sandhemssjön. Its furnishings also reflect the history of the area: some pieces recall that there were several earlier churches in the region.
Among the notable objects is a processional cross from Limoges, France, dating to just before 1200. The church thus brings together different periods: a 19th-century building and a much older work of art. The local heritage farm Skattegården lies immediately next to Sandhem Church. The church and heritage farm stand side by side as neighbouring historic sites.
Hiking trails with different starting points
Both the distance and the starting point are useful when choosing a route. The Kyllemo Trail starts at Sandhem railway station and is 4.7 kilometres long. It passes through the village and a varied landscape of forest and cultivated land. The Hene Trail starts at Sägnernas Hus in Sandhem and is 5.0 kilometres long.
The Sägnernas Trail is 5.7 kilometres long, marked in yellow and can be walked in either direction. It passes through a mostly flat, mixed landscape of forest and cultivated land. The three stated route lengths range from 4.7 to 5.7 kilometres; their starting points and the route features described for each provide additional guidance. If you want to start at the railway station, consider the Kyllemo Trail; the Hene Trail is a named route option for starting at Sägnernas Hus.
The Eriksgatuleden also combines landscapes with traces of history. It passes through forests and along lakes and farms. In some sections, up to twelve sunken lanes run alongside one another. The trail also passes the remains of Saxarp distillery, described in the 19th century as one of the largest distilleries in Västergötland. Another nature-rich walk close to the water runs between Sandhem and Saxarp.
Lake Sandhemssjön and outdoor activities
Lake Sandhemssjön covers approximately 84 hectares and has a shoreline of about eight kilometres. The Kohagen bathing area is on the lake. It has a bathing jetty, a playground and a barbecue area. So, alongside the hiking trails, there is also a bathing area and places to spend time by the water.
Another activity is disc golf at the recreation area by the illuminated running trail. The course has been in operation since 2022 and has twelve holes in varied, hilly terrain. The mostly flat route of the Sägnernas Trail and the hilly terrain of the disc golf course are different features to consider when planning outdoor activities.
Events and practical information
Sägnernas Hus hosts dance evenings, markets, concerts, themed celebrations, fairs and other events for children and adults throughout the year. Individual programme items may change; if a particular event is central to your visit, check its date before travelling.
Meals are offered at Sägnernas Hus in connection with dance events and visits to the folk museum. As booking arrangements may change, it is a good idea to check them in advance if you are planning a meal. Sägnernas Hus also has parking spaces for motorhomes in Sandhem.
Sandhem railway station has step-free access, and free parking is available at the station. It is also the starting point of the Kyllemo Trail.
