A stay in Mullsjö can be planned around woodcarving in the town centre, historic buildings, a landscaped park and natural areas nearby. There are also trails, opportunities for paddling and a ski centre.
Culture and local history
In the centre of Mullsjö is Museet svenska trägubbar. It displays the world’s largest collection of Swedish-carved wooden figures: around 1,300 objects made by approximately 250 carvers and artists. Mullsjö hembygdsgård is a well-preserved 19th-century farmstead on one of Mullsjö’s hills. Its buildings date from the mid-19th century and served as a teachers’ residence.
Margaretaparken is also in the centre. It was created in the 1950s and is currently undergoing careful restoration. Large rhododendron bushes, hundreds of plant species, ponds, rock gardens and paths shape the grounds. Guided tours of Margaretaparken can be booked. The two historic sites represent different periods: the buildings at hembygdsgård date from the 19th century, while the park was created later.
Forest trails and natural areas
The Ryfors Gammelskog nature reserve lies about three kilometres from Mullsjö. Pine and spruce trees grow there; many are 150 to 200 years old, and some pines are more than 300 years old. Several marked trails follow easy-to-walk paths. Nearby Nyckelås, by contrast, is characterised by a large deciduous forest with many rare species. There are two car parks and a marked trail that is about four kilometres long in total. The areas also differ in their trail information: Nyckelås gives an approximate route length, while Ryfors Gammelskog has several marked trails to choose from.
The Stråkens strandskogar nature reserve includes pine forest on sandy soil, several lakes and many trails. The nearby lake Stråken is 24 kilometres long; there are several rest areas and shelters along its shores. You can canoe and kayak on the lake. These waterways add a different type of activity to the forest areas, while keeping the landscape descriptions of the different locations distinct.
Plan activities and travel
Nearby, the Tidan is a canoe route; while paddling, you pass several bird sanctuaries. Another option for water activities is the children’s swimming area, Barnbadet: the water is shallow, and a ramp leads into it. If you’re interested in winter sports, Mullsjö Skidcenter has seven ski runs and a ski school.
For bus travel, route 116 operated by Länstrafiken runs between Jönköping and Mullsjö in both directions. If you plan to use this connection, check the timetable before travelling. The activities offer a choice of different focuses: local history and gardens, marked trails, paddling or ski runs.
