Reftele combines architectural and school history with birdwatching at Lake Draven and golf at Källebackens Golfbana. The former courthouse, Ölmestad school and industrial museum, and local heritage farmstead show different sides of the town’s history; Draven and the golf course offer other highlights. This distinction can help you choose a hotel: plan your stay around whether you are mainly interested in culture, nature or a sporting activity.
Architectural history and school collection
In the centre of town stands the former Reftele courthouse, set in a garden surrounded by large trees and a spruce hedge. The brick building was constructed in 1903/04 to plans by master builder John Johnsson of Värnamo. It is considered a good example of turn-of-the-century brick architecture. Another stop on a tour of local history is Reftele’s older railway station building, dating from 1876.
The Ă–lmestad school and industrial museum is housed in the old Ă–lmestad school, built in 1926. The collection includes objects from disused schools in the former municipality of Reftele, as well as more than 800 school wall charts. The textile exhibition covers the processing of flax and wool, ribbon weaving and sewing; textile care tools are also among its subjects. School life and textile work thus offer two distinct ways to explore local history.
The construction dates also provide a timeline for comparison: the railway station building from 1876 is older than the courthouse from 1903/04 and the Ă–lmestad school from 1926. Railway history, courthouse architecture and school history thus represent different periods in the townscape.
Farmstead, landscape and local traditions
The Reftele local heritage farmstead is a small group of farm buildings in a cultural landscape surrounded by pastureland. It includes a simple dwelling, a barn and a smithy. The old courthouse site of Brödrahalla lies near the heritage farmstead. Together, the farm buildings in a cultural landscape and the former courthouse site represent different aspects of local history. Local tradition also includes Drängalyft: stones that farmhands lifted to prove their strength. The name refers to a test of physical strength and adds a story from everyday life to the architectural landmarks.
Draven and golf: different activities
Draven lies three kilometres southeast of Reftele. An orange-marked trail runs around the lake and is about ten kilometres long. Several birdwatching towers and a hide add to the opportunities for birdwatching. Trail conditions may change, so check the state of the trail before setting out.
Källebackens Golfbana is a gently rolling woodland and meadow course with a few water features. It is suitable for both beginners and more experienced players. The activities offer a clear choice: Draven combines a roughly ten-kilometre circuit with birdwatching, while Källebackens offers golf on gently rolling terrain.
