In Gislaved, you can make hiking trails, walks, art, and local history different focal points of your stay. The Gislavedsleden connects the surrounding area with the town; other routes lead to landscapes along the Nissan or focus on a theme of their own. There is also public art and historic buildings. What you plan depends on whether you want to spend more time outdoors or are interested in art and history.
Hiking Trails and Walks
The Gislavedsleden is connected to Gislaved by a route just under five kilometres long. It passes through Stora Båraryd and joins a walking and cycling path in the northern part of the town. Along the Gislavedsleden, there are rest areas with wind shelters and toilets. In the south, the trail connects to the Hallandsleden; in the north, it links via the Järnbärarleden to the Höglandsleden. This means you can consider a section connected to Gislaved and the routes in both directions as different aspects of planning your hike.
The Nissan Nature and Culture Trail is a walking route along the Nissan in Gislaved. It focuses on natural and cultural landscapes. The walk through the Solar System offers a different thematic approach: laid out at a scale of 1:1.5 billion, it consists of stone installations. The two walks therefore differ mainly in their focus—landscape along the Nissan on the one hand, a model of the Solar System on the other.
Art in the Town
Gislaveds Konsthall presents international, national, and local art. Its open workshop programme is free of charge; the arrangements depend on the exhibitions on display. If you plan to attend a workshop, it is therefore worth checking what exhibitions are currently on.
There is also art to discover in public spaces. Stjärnfall is an artwork covering almost 3,800 square metres. It consists of 125 brushed stainless-steel columns, each six metres tall. The size of the area, the number of columns, and their material shape the work in different ways. The art gallery and Stjärnfall thus offer different starting points for an art-focused stay: the exhibition programme on the one hand, and a work in public space on the other.
Green Spaces and Nature Nearby
Located along the Nissan, Dalenparken is Gislaved’s largest park. Large green spaces offer both sunny and shaded areas. There is seating by the river, as well as a gravel football pitch, a boules court, and an outdoor gym. The park therefore offers both places to relax and various opportunities to exercise.
The Anderstorps Stormosse nature reserve is located near Gislaved. The trail through the reserve starts about 1.5 kilometres from the edge of town. From the car park, a path about 350 metres long leads to an accessible, two-storey birdwatching tower. A ramp leads to the lower platform. As the facilities may change, check their condition before your visit.
Local History and Your Stay
Gislaved’s local heritage park consists of about ten buildings. Tingstensstugan was built there in 1845, and Orrastugan was moved to the park in 1961. Next to the heritage park is an old stone circle, now interpreted as a burial site. These places bring historic buildings and one possible interpretation of the stone circle together—with an important distinction: interpreting it as a burial site is just that, an interpretation.
The Gislaved Industrial Museum, housed in a former belt factory almost 100 years old, offers another perspective on local history. Together with the heritage park, it creates a contrast between industrial history and historic buildings. The themes mentioned offer different points of focus without requiring you to follow a set route.
