Gamla stan is considered one of Sweden’s best examples of a preserved, cohesive wooden town and follows a late-medieval town plan. The district comprises 48 listed buildings. To understand the historic town centre, therefore, it is not just one building that matters: the late-medieval layout and the preserved wooden buildings together shape the character of the district.
Cultural history in Gamla stan and beyond
The Eksjö Museum, which presents the history of Eksjö, is located by the Eksjöån river in Gamla stan. Fornminnesgården houses extensive collections of tools, crafts and furnishings. At Aschanska gården, Aschanska hemmet can be visited on a guided tour. Each has a distinct focus: town history, collection items and a guided tour of Aschanska hemmet.
Eksjö kyrka brings together architectural history and older furnishings. It was built in the neoclassical style towards the end of the 19th century, after the previous church, dating from 1666, had been demolished. At the same time, an altar and a pulpit from the late 17th century have been preserved from the earlier church. The church building is therefore from a later period than these two furnishings.
Trails on foot and by bike
Hälsans stig is a five-kilometre loop along lit cycle and pedestrian paths in Eksjö. At 4.6 kilometres, Skedhultsspåret is almost the same length, but runs through Skedhults friluftsområde and its surroundings; yellow posts and arrows mark the trail. The routes are similar in length. For comparison, their route and wayfinding are therefore especially useful: the loop along lit paths in Eksjö or the marked trail through Skedhults friluftsområde.
The difference between the stated distances is much greater for the cycling routes. The route around Lake Hunsnäsen is about 5.7 kilometres long and runs over asphalt, gravel roads, paths and cycle paths. Check the route details before setting off. Albert Engströmleden starts in the centre of Eksjö and is 45 to 74 kilometres long. The approximately 5.7-kilometre route around Hunsnäsen and the length of Albert Engströmleden are therefore very different in scale, helping you assess the planned distance.
A nature destination near Eksjö
Skurugata Nature Reserve lies about eight kilometres northeast of Eksjö. It offers marked trails as well as an accessible path from the car park to Skuruhatt. This location complements Eksjö’s trails and cultural sites with a nearby nature destination. The marked trails and the path from the car park to Skuruhatt provide different points of reference for planning.
