Marieby offers several distinct points of interest for a visit: the wooden church and the ruins of the medieval church, views of limestone layers in summer, cycling on forest trails, and an open meadow by Storsjön. You can choose your focus based on your interests: architectural history, visible rock formations, exercise in the forest, or landscape. The season is also important when planning. At Stenbrottet i Marieby, you can see different layers of limestone lying on top of one another in summer; you can cycle on Fursteli Cykelstigar during the snow-free season.

Church architecture and earlier history

Marieby Church is a wooden church built in 1890. Its foundation is made of stone quarried at Marieby Quarry. This makes it possible to distinguish two aspects of the building: its wooden structure and the stone used for its foundation. The stone’s origin connects the church to Marieby Quarry.

The ruins of Marieby’s medieval church lie one kilometre south of Marieby Church. It burned down in 1876; some older gravestones remain around the ruins. The dates mark different events: 1890 is the year the wooden church was built, and 1876 is the year the medieval church burned down. The ruins therefore represent a distinct historical site, not another part of the wooden church.

Coming from Östersund, the entrance and car park for Marieby Church are immediately after the road hump. Check this direction before setting out if you are approaching the church from this direction.

Limestone and cycling trails throughout the year

At Stenbrottet i Marieby, you can see the different layers of limestone lying on top of one another in summer. If you are interested in the visible structure of the rock, this is a distinct focus alongside church and architectural history. Summer is the appropriate time to plan a visit to see the layers.

Fursteli Cykelstigar offers an extensive network of forest trails for cycling in Marieby during the snow-free season. Two conditions therefore matter when planning your visit: summer for viewing the limestone layers, and the snow-free season for cycling. You can time your trip to suit your preferred focus.

Nästmyren Fugelsta and the landscape by Storsjön

Nästmyren Fugelsta is an open meadow on the conifer-covered heights above the cultivated landscape of Fugelsta and Marieby by Storsjön. The landscape can be understood through three elements: the open meadow, the wooded heights, and the cultivated landscape of the two places by the lake. As a landscape feature, Nästmyren Fugelsta differs from the churches and the quarry; the focus here is the meadow and its position above the cultivated landscape.

You can reach Nästmyren Fugelsta via the turnoff to the Brunkulla car park. Heading towards Marieby, it lies about 100 metres before the church. The approximate distance helps you identify the turnoff on your way there; check conditions before setting out.

Another cultural aspect

Marieby Hembygdsgård is also located in an old, attractive farmstead. It adds a different kind of architectural history to the church sites: here, the setting of a farmstead is the focus. If you are choosing several cultural themes for your stay, you can consider the churches and the farmstead as separate points of interest.
