Lit offers several distinct reasons to visit: Högforsleden, a hiking trail with forest, meadows, and river views; churches with different historical connections; and winter sports. When planning, a simple question can help you decide what to focus on: should the trip centre on nature, culture, or winter sports?
Hiking, Rivers, and Nature
Lit and the surrounding villages lie between the Indalsälven, Hårkan, and Långan rivers. Högforsleden runs through dense forest and open meadows, with views of the flowing waters of the Hårkan. If you choose hiking as your main focus, you’ll find a specific trail here with a variety of landscapes. There are also fishing waters and berry forests in Lit and the surrounding villages.
For a water-based activity, day paddling trips can start directly from Lits Camping on the Hårkan or the Indalsälven. Lits Camping is on a peninsula where the Hårkan flows into the Indalsälven. If you’re choosing between hiking and paddling, you can compare a trail through forest and meadows with views of the Hårkan against a day trip on either of the two rivers.
Churches and History
Lits nya kyrka was completed in 1797 in the Neoclassical style. Its yellow-rendered grey-stone walls and white corner pilasters define its exterior. Corner pilasters are flat, vertical architectural features at the corners of a building; they emphasise the edges of the façade. The church’s Neoclassical interior is well preserved and of very high quality, while also featuring clear modern elements. This combination makes the interior a distinctive architectural subject: the Neoclassical furnishings remain prominent, but they are not the only visible design feature.
Another historical connection is the medieval church ruin. It was archaeologically investigated and conserved in 1968 and is now a preserved, atmospheric monument. Compared with the church completed in 1797, it represents a medieval ruin alongside a Neoclassical church building—two different historical forms in Lit.
Winter Activities and Choosing Accommodation
In winter, snowmobiling is available in Lit. For skiing, there is a floodlit cross-country trail and a downhill ski slope. The options differ by activity and facility: motorised snowmobiling, cross-country skiing on the trail, and alpine skiing on the slope. When planning, you can decide which of these winter activities you want to define your stay.
Buses run to the centre of Lit, and there are also routes outside the town centre. If you want to match your hotel choice to a bus connection, take this difference into account when planning. This lets you choose your accommodation based on the connection that matters for your trip.
