The Långfjället runt tour begins and ends at STF Grövelsjön Mountain Station, 816 metres above sea level in the border region between Sweden and Norway. It is listed as 33 kilometres; if a boat trip is included, the distance is 23 kilometres. When planning, check which distance applies to the option you choose. This makes it possible to compare the tour with a guided day trip that also starts at the mountain station: it leads to Storvätteshågna, the highest peak in Långfjället, at 1,204 metres above sea level. Dates and availability for this tour may change.

Mountain trails and national parks

The “Grövelsjön – Fjällintro familj” experience has a different focus: it includes a guided hike of about four kilometres, covering the basics of navigation and mountain safety. During the summer season, various providers in the Grövelsjöfjällen area offer guided half- and full-day mountain tours; individual providers and schedules may change. This gives you a choice of different formats: a short guided hike, half- or full-day tours, and the day trip to the summit.

The Långfjället Nature Reserve includes Grövelsjön Mountain Station and the Södra Kungsleden trail and covers 68,000 hectares. In the wider region, Töfsingdalen National Park preserves a boulder-strewn landscape and coniferous forest in the southern mountain regions. There, coniferous and deciduous forests can develop naturally. The Hävlingen entrance to the national park is 13 kilometres from the mountain station and can be reached on foot or on skis. In the surrounding area, the park is usually accessed via Lake Hävlingen and the bridge over the Storån near Särsjön. Winter conditions and snowmobile access may vary.

Hiking, cross-country skiing and a clear fishing rule

Gröveltur 3 is a scenic circular route to the tranquil Silverfallet waterfall. The Olåns wind shelter rest area is one kilometre from Silverfallet. Old hay meadows and protective mountain forest surround the site, which also has a barbecue area. Gröveltur 4 passes Valdalsbygget, a historic mountain farm that offers a glimpse into traditional mountain life. These destinations showcase different sides of the area: a circular route to a waterfall and a place where the history of mountain life comes to life.

In winter, Grövelsjön has 100 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails. If you are interested in fishing, note the rule for the Storån: only fly-fishing is permitted there. The routes, tours and activities differ not only in length, but also in their focus and applicable conditions.

Cultural traces by the lake and in the mountains

Remains of Sami settlements can be found near Grövelsjön, including kåtor and other buildings from Sweden’s southernmost Sami settlements. Another story at the lake is told by the wreck of a German Heinkel 111: the aircraft made an emergency landing on Grövelsjön in June 1940 during the Second World War; parts of the wreck still protrude above the water. Guided boat tours go there. In this way, traces of Sami settlements, traditional mountain farming life and an event from wartime history offer distinct points of connection with the area’s cultural history.

Getting there and finding your way

Grövelsjön is connected to Mora by daily bus services; the journey takes about three and a half hours. Check the timetable before travelling so you can plan around the stated service. The M/S Sylöra runs from Sjöstugan on Grövelsjön to Sylen in Norway. If you want to use this boat service, it is a good idea to check the timetable.

A free map of Grövelsjöfjällen is available to help you find your way. It shows hiking trails, Gröveltur routes, car parks, sights, restaurants and other practical information. You can use it to look up the destinations and activities mentioned here before finalising your plans for the day.
