Fjätervålen can be viewed as a summit destination, hiking area and winter resort. Toppleden leads to the summit of Fjätervålen; the Fjätervålen runt circular trail runs mostly through the Städjan-Nipfjället Nature Reserve. Planning therefore depends on both the route length and destination, as well as the activity: hiking, cycling and skiing each have their own trails and conditions.
Mountain Massif and Geological Features
Städjan-Nipfjället Nature Reserve consists of a large mountain massif, with the peaks of Städjan, Nipfjället and Fjätervålen in the south. The Slukåsarna formations are located on Fjätervåla and are the largest in Dalarna. This means that distinctive names and landforms sit alongside specific trail destinations: Toppleden offers views of the nature reserve, while the longer Fjätervålen runt loop runs mostly through the protected area.
Hiking and Cycling Trails
The 6 km Toppleden leads to the 1,002 m summit of Fjätervålen. The 12 km Fjätervålen runt loop is twice as long and runs mostly through the Städjan-Nipfjället Nature Reserve. The two hiking trails therefore differ both in length and in their stated destinations: one leads to the summit, while the other is a longer loop with a large section in the protected area.
For cycling, there is the 4.5 km Björnstigen, which is suitable for experienced cyclists. Its length and stated suitability make it a separate option alongside the hiking trails. Foskdalsvallsleden, by contrast, is a hiking trail with defined endpoints: it starts at the valley station of the Anker lift and ends in Foskdalsvallen.
Fäbod Tradition in Foskdalsvallen
Foskdalsvallen is a well-preserved Swedish summer pasture farm with origins in the 17th century. During the summer Fäbod days, Jönnbröd, coffee and homemade pastries are served there. If you plan to visit, confirm the opening hours by phone. This distinguishes the seasonal stop from the hiking trails described here, without assuming fixed visiting hours.
Winter Trails and Rest Cabin
Fjätervålen is said to have the highest ski slope in Dalarna. A waxing cabin is available around the clock at Fjätervålen’s ski rental; as availability may change, it is best to confirm this before your visit.
Two cross-country ski trails are listed, with different details. The 4.6 km Elljusspåret has easy, family-friendly terrain but is listed as closed. The 14 km FJÄLLET RUNT trail goes via Svartfjället to Rybäckskojan and is also listed as closed. Check the trail status before making specific plans.
Rybäckskojan is a small rest cabin with a stove that is open to everyone. From Fjätervålen, it is 7 km by ski trail to the cabin; trail conditions vary by season. Overnight stays in the cabin are not permitted. These conditions are important if you are planning to stop at the cabin rather than stay overnight.
Water Destinations with Seasonal Access
Lilla Fjätfallet waterfall is 4 km south of Fjätervålen. A suspension bridge over the river leads to a rest area with barbecue facilities by the waterfall. Access differs between summer and winter, so check the conditions for your planned visit.
The swimming lake Stora Harundsjön is 15 km from Fjätervålen, in the Städjan-Nipfjället Nature Reserve. Access and conditions vary by season. The two water destinations offer different experiences: at Lilla Fjätfallet, the bridge and rest area are the main features, while Stora Harundsjön is a swimming lake within the nature reserve.
