Slite brings together an exceptional archipelago landscape shaped by water and traces of limestone quarrying, fishing, seafaring and the cement industry. When planning a stay, it is worth exploring two sides of the area: the coastal and island nature outdoors, and the history connected with the sea and work in the town and on Enholmen.
Archipelago Nature and Landscape
The Slite Archipelago Nature Reserve covers more than 6,000 hectares and consists mostly of water. It is Gotland’s only area with a pronounced archipelago character; its high natural values can be found both in the water and on land. Birdlife is part of the landscape, as are traces of limestone quarrying, fishing and seafaring. Sea stacks, shingle spits and beach ridges are typical geological formations in the area. Around Slite, the landscape is also shaped by limestone-rich alvar and cultural landscapes partly maintained by grazing.
Bogeviken, a shallow sea bay separated from the open sea, lies southwest of Slite. It has rich birdlife and is a spawning ground for fish. Two different landscape types can be found side by side: a shallow, enclosed bay and an archipelago area consisting mostly of water.
Paths, Beach and Getting Around
A marked hiking trail in Slite is 10 kilometres long and runs mostly by the water. The Gotland Bike Park, based in and around Slite, offers everything from road cycling to mountain biking. Prepared mountain bike trails in Slite and the surrounding area include easier and more challenging sections; a long mountain bike trail goes around Boge. You can choose between a waterside route with a set length and cycling options with different disciplines and trail profiles.
Slite bad is a shallow sandy beach more than 200 metres long. The beach has been adapted for accessibility and is equipped with a ramp; a beach wheelchair can be borrowed through Slite Intresseförening. Check current availability before your visit. Bus routes 20 and 22 stop directly at Slite bad; check the current timetable before travelling.
Slite Church stands on a hill in the middle of town and offers views of Slite, the sea and Bogeviken. From here, you can take in views of both the town and the bay southwest of Slite.
Industrial History and Fortress Ruins
The Slite Industrial Museum is a small museum in a residential building. It displays historical material about the more than 100-year history of Slite’s cement factory. The museum is open on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. or by prior arrangement by phone or email. Check current opening information before your visit.
The well-preserved ruins of Karlsvärd Fortress are on Enholmen. Sweden built the fortress after losing Ösel; it offers a way to trace Swedish military history from the 17th century to the present day. Visitors are welcome to explore the island on foot. However, the donjons and defensive works are accessible only on a guided tour. If you want to see them, plan to join a tour and check the current visitor information in advance.
