Coming to Svabensverk from the direction of Falun, you’ll find the church at the entrance to the village, right beside National Road 50 on the left-hand side. This landmark also provides an introduction to the history of the former ironworks: Anton Svab, a mining official from Falun, founded it in the early 19th century. Slag stone has become a hallmark of Svabensverk. The church, industrial past and paths along the water offer several perspectives on the village.

Church and Industrial History

The church was originally built as a school and converted into a church in 1884–1885. The 170-kilogram Kristineklockan hangs in the bell tower; it is considered the first bell to have been imported to Sweden from Sheffield. Its former use as a school, its later conversion and the bell give the church building several distinct historical points of interest.

By the stream, the remains of the Övre Hammaren dam, iron anchor ends and the foundations of the former forge can be seen. These traces of the smithing work connect the ironworks’ founding story with tangible evidence. The 100-year-old wheel tracks also tell of the economic use of the landscape: they were laid out to meet the needs of forestry.

Landscape, Lakes and Activities

Svabensverk and Hämmenåsen are of considerable scientific, cultural-historical and scenic value. This means that, alongside the village’s history, the landscape itself is one of the defining features of a visit.

Several large, elongated lakes around Svabensverk are used for long-distance ice skating. Natural lake surfaces change with the weather and wind; conditions are weather-dependent, and ice safety must be checked. The local community association rents out a few pairs of long-distance skates. Check in advance whether they are available during your visit.

The Hämmen–Svabensverk bathing area has a small sandy beach. Fishing permits for Lake Hämmen are sold at Bockahästen; check the sales arrangements before fishing.
