Roses in a woodland clearing, traces of ironworking and a view across northern Gästrikland reveal different sides of Ockelbo. For planning your visit, gardens, cultural history and natural attractions are all within reach.

Garden park and seasonal harvest festival

Wij Trädgårdar is a modern garden park in a woodland clearing in Ockelbo. The Rosträdgården is home to around 250 different shrub and park roses, giving the garden a distinct botanical focus. The seasonal calendar includes an annual harvest festival on September 5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. At Wij Trädgårdar, locally produced goods, food, cut flowers and vegetables are offered. Check the date for your travel year before planning your visit around it.

Industrial history and historic buildings

Wij valsverk is a unique industrial museum. In 1797, a bar iron forge was built at the Wij estate, where pig iron from the blast furnace at Åbron was processed. This makes it possible to trace the production process: the pig iron came from the blast furnace at Åbron and was further processed at the Wij estate.

The Ockelbo kyrka represents a different period in history. The large stone church, built in the 1790s, burned down in 1904. It was rebuilt between 1906 and 1908 using the surviving walls.

Timber architecture and sacred buildings

Oklagård is an enclosed heritage farm built using log construction, illustrating the development of log-building techniques over 1,000 years. Ödmårdens Stavkyrka is in Norrbo, Ockelbo, and is a reconstructed early medieval wooden temple. It stands above a deep grey-stone crypt with a spring whose water flows north. The two buildings have different points of emphasis: Oklagård illustrates the long development of log construction, while the description of the Stavkyrka focuses on the wooden temple, stone crypt and spring.

Views and trails at Rönnåsen

The summit of Rönnåsen is about 8 kilometres from central Ockelbo and 270 metres above sea level. From there, the view extends across large parts of northern Gästrikland. Rönnåsen has the child-friendly Mullestigen trail. There is also a trail leading to an accessible viewpoint at a shingle field.

There are fitness trails and hiking trails at and around Rönnåsen. The Gästriketriangeln hiking trail connects Rönnåsen, Åmot and Jädraås. When planning your activities, you can distinguish between the viewpoint, trails at Rönnåsen and a hiking trail linking three places.

The Älgparken in Ockelbo offers another nature experience, where visitors can see moose up close. This adds an animal encounter to the scenic views and hiking trails.
