Church art, mining history and outdoor activities offer different reasons to stay in Torsåker. When planning, the specific conditions matter: the ski connection is groomed only when there is enough snow, Gammelgården offers visits in summer, and it is worth checking the dates for guided tours through Stollgången. This lets you match your interests to your travel dates without confusing the different offerings.

The Church and Local History

The present-day three-aisled Torsåker Church was built in 1754–1758 on the site of an earlier building dating from the 12th century. Inside the church are an altarpiece and a pulpit by Mårten Jönsson. To understand the chronology, it is worth distinguishing the building from the history of the site: the present church dates from the 18th century, while a building from the 12th century had already stood in the same place.

Gammelgården: Farm History and Midsummer

Gammelgården is a miner’s farm dating from the early 19th century. The building now called Gammelgården was moved from the Hagas farm in the village of Stenshyttan to Fors by in the 1920s. Its construction and relocation are two distinct stages in its history. Every year, the Torsåker local heritage association invites visitors to a traditional Midsummer celebration at Gammelgården and offers visits in summer. Check the dates for visits and the celebration before your trip.

Rock, Mining and Trails

At Valls kalkbrott, the bedrock in Torsåker contains both iron ore and limestone. The limestone bands are generally long, narrow and winding; they formed through complex folding in the rock. Stollgången also offers a glimpse into mining history: the 265-metre-long mine passage leads directly into Storberget. Guided tours of underground mine chambers are offered at Stollgången; check in advance whether a tour date suits your travel dates. From Stollgången, a signposted nature trail about two kilometres long leads to Tjärnäs hytta. The nature trail is one route option; the tour of the mine chambers is another. There is also a walking area around “Stollen,” the colloquial name for the mine passage.

Plant Diversity at the Pelargon Museum

The Pelargonmuseum & Trädgård in Torsåker displays more than 200 varieties of pelargonium. The site includes two greenhouses measuring 160 and 130 square metres respectively, as well as a café. The collection, greenhouses and café offer different ways to enjoy a visit focused on plants and gardening.

Disc Golf, Exercise Trails and Skiing

There is a disc golf course in central Torsåker, where you can play a free nine-hole round. Discs can be borrowed for the course from the parish office by calling 0290-400 02. The Torsåker exercise trails start above Torsåkers IP on Kägelvägen; one five-kilometre route leads to Lindforsberget. When there is enough snow, Torsåkers IF grooms a connection from the five-kilometre loop of the Torsåker ski trail to Pålsboängarna. The two five-kilometre references concern different offerings: an exercise trail route and a ski loop with a connection. Snow conditions determine whether the skiing option is available.

Forest, Views and a Swimming Area

South of Torsåker lies Kårsberget, a 66-hectare natural forest area. A short hiking trail across the rocky terrain leads to a viewpoint. Malmjärn offers a different kind of landscape experience: its shallow swimming area is four kilometres southeast of Torsåker. These are two distinct options—a natural forest with a trail to a viewpoint, or a swimming area with shallow water.

Ironworking in the Wider Travel Area

For visitors who would also like to learn about ironworking in Bergslagen, beyond the local attractions, the wider travel area includes Skommarhyttan, a former ironworks site along the Gästrikeleden trail. At the municipal level, the Gästrikeleden passes through the municipality of Hofors and by historic traces of ironworking in Bergslagen. This offers a way to explore the region’s ironworking heritage alongside the local details of Torsåker.
