Vallsta can be explored through two very different interests: Gästgivars brings the World Heritage of the Hälsingland farmhouses to life, while the ski trails near Hosarbo offer specific distances for winter. There is also a cycling route around the villages of Orbaden and Vallsta that follows the Ljusnan River and passes places to eat and stop for coffee.

Gästgivars: World Heritage and Painting

Gästgivars was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012, together with six other Hälsingland farmhouses. One of the four visitor centers for the World Heritage Hälsingland farmhouses is located at the farm. Visitors can get help there with planning their Hälsingland farmhouse experience. This planning service makes Gästgivars a good starting point if you want to explore the World Heritage as a theme, rather than just visit a single house.

The large celebration hall also tells the story of the farmhouses’ design: it was decorated by the influential painter Jonas Wallström. Wallström developed a stencil-painting technique that spread to other parts of Sweden. At Gästgivars, a distinctive interior and the history of a technique that gained significance beyond a single farmhouse come together.

Music and Events in Hälsingland

Orbadenstämman is an annual gathering of musicians in Hälsingland. The program features folk music, concerts, children’s performances, courses, and dancing; food and drinks are also part of the event. Dates and the program vary from year to year. If you would like to include the gathering in your trip, check the organizer’s information for your chosen year.

The festival program includes a free church-boat concert on Orbaden beach. No advance registration is required, but you should still check the date against the current program. This is especially useful if you are planning your trip around a specific event rather than simply looking for culture in the region.

Ski Trails near Hosarbo and the Cycling Route

The municipal visitor information, last updated on October 7, 2024, lists three ski trails at Hosarbo in Vallsta, measuring 2.5, 5, and 12 kilometers. You can choose according to the distance you want: the 5-kilometer trail is between the shortest and longest loops. There is also a connecting trail between Orfa and the long Hosarbo trail. Trail conditions depend on the season; check the latest information before your visit.

Another way to experience the area is by cycling around the villages of Orbaden and Vallsta. Part of the route follows the Ljusnan for several kilometers, and it also passes several places to eat and stop for coffee. While the ski trails are distinguished by their specific distances, the river and places to stop along the way provide a guide for this cycling route. As local businesses’ offerings can change, it is worth checking what is currently available before setting off.

Local Products and Orbaden Beach

According to the municipal business profile dated April 26, 2023, Östigården Vallsta produced and sold Tunnbröd and Ostkaka. The Tunnbröd was baked with flour made from grain grown on the farm. Production and sales arrangements may change; if you want to plan specifically around these products, ask about the current offering.

Orbaden beach is one kilometer long and has both deep and gently sloping areas; it is suitable for the whole family. The place is also a historical attraction: as early as the 1930s, local residents and visitors from all over Sweden would gather there. Along with the Orbadenstämman concert, the beach offers a distinctive cultural and scenic point of interest for planning a regional trip.
