Fänforsen gives Björbo a distinctive waterside destination: this wild, fast-flowing stretch of rapids is 900 metres long, with a drop of 9 metres. It is considered one of the largest river rapids south of Norrland. If you want to focus your stay on nature and outdoor activities, you’ll find a rest area, fishing opportunities and a destination for whitewater activities here.

Fänforsen: River, Fishing and Art

Fishing is permitted at the Fänforsen nature rest area, using catch and release. Freestyle, canoe slalom, whitewater downhill and kayak cross competitions are held there every year. If you want to plan your trip around a competition, check the event dates in advance. This will help you plan your visit without assuming a specific date.

Culture is also part of the riverside setting: the “Konst i byn” exhibition is held beside Fänforsen during the summer months. The project has been run by the “Färg och form i Björbo” art group since 2015. Its seasonal schedule makes it a fitting addition to a visit during the warmer part of the year; when planning, consider the exhibition alongside your preferred travel dates.

Prästbuo and Trails Around Björbo

Prästbuo has historical roots dating back at least to the 17th century. The summer pasture is located right beside Källbäckens by and offers opportunities to rest and stay overnight. On Stage 10 between Salå and Dala-Floda, you can also stay overnight in the hut at Prästbuo. If you plan to stay there, check the booking conditions before your trip.

Fäbodledsområde 10 is centred at Mejdåsen, close to Björbo. To get there, park by Tempo in Björbo, cross the old stone bridge and walk towards Mejdåsen. Another hiking option is Stage 10 between Salå and Dala-Floda: an easy route along the Västerdalälven, following old paths and a railway embankment. The two descriptions provide different points of reference for your planning, without requiring you to combine them into a single route.

In the early 1970s, the ski section of Björbo IF built a 2.5-kilometre floodlit ski trail at Prästbuo. Check locally to find out its current condition. The options in the area therefore vary depending on your interests: the ski trail is part of the local leisure history, while the described paths and the stage along the Västerdalälven offer specific hiking options.

Experience Whitewater and Plan Your Journey

Dala River Adventure offers whitewater rafting on the Västerdalälven from Nås downstream to Fänforsen in Björbo. On the same tour, participants can try both a large raft for eight people and a small raft for two. The season may vary; if you want to make rafting the focus of your trip, check current dates with the provider.

Fänforsen is accessible by car via the E16; check road conditions before setting off. The area is also easily reached by bicycle or on foot. There is a Dalatrafik bus stop nearby. Check the current stop and timetable when planning your journey so you can plan accordingly.

When looking for a holiday rental in Björbo, you can start by deciding what you want your stay to focus on: the rapids and waterside activities, seasonal art, or trails and summer pasture history. This will help you choose a suitable base for your own plans, without assuming that the different destinations and experiences form a set itinerary.
