Avesta tells the story of industrial history from more than one perspective. The ironworks is an industrial heritage site of national significance and an unusually well-preserved ironworks complex. Verket is a museum and cultural venue in Avesta, offering a glimpse into the industrial surroundings and the journey from iron ore to iron and steel: visitors can follow this process there with the help of film, sound and technology.

Industrial history, art and old neighbourhoods

At Verket, the exploration of ironmaking meets contemporary art. Avesta Art is the annual summer exhibition of Swedish and international contemporary art at Verket; the exhibitions change from year to year. This makes it possible to tailor a visit to different interests: industrial history, art or both in one place.

Gamla Byn, Avesta’s oldest neighbourhood, offers another historical perspective. This living, well-preserved industrial settlement includes buildings dating from the 1630s onwards. Gamla Byn is also home to the 10-Daler coin, described as the world’s largest coin. The Avesta Coin Museum is dedicated to Swedish coin history, from the Viking Age to the present day.

Avesta’s history can also be seen in striking forms beyond these two places: the world’s largest Dala Horse stands at the rest area on National Highways 70/68. It is 13 metres tall, weighs 67 tonnes and was inaugurated in 1989.

Literary history and summer activities

In Karlbo, Karlfeldtsgården is located in the childhood home of Swedish poet Erik Axel Karlfeldt. Its summer programme includes concerts, family days, talks and celebrations; individual events vary. The garden offers coffee and pastries seasonally, handicrafts for sale and creative activities. The venue thus complements Avesta’s industrial and artistic themes with a literary history tied to a particular house.

Bison, river and Döda Fallen

Avesta Bison Park is one of Northern Europe’s most important breeding facilities for the conservation of the European bison. Visitor offerings include a digital tour available daily using QR codes, as well as tailor-made tours for groups; these offerings may vary by season. Seasonally, Ladugårdsfiket in the park serves coffee and pastries, as well as light meals.

Along the Dalälven, Avesta offers a wide range of outdoor activities. One special destination is Döda Fallen: about 7,000 years ago, the Dalälven carved a new riverbed. As a result, the old waterfalls dried up, forming Döda Fallen. Information boards at the foot of the waterfalls and on top of the rocky outcrop explain how they were formed. Döda Fallen is a stop on the 8.5-kilometre Älvpromenaden loop between Avesta and Krylbo.

Compare trails and distances

The sections of Bruksleden that pass through Avesta are about 12 kilometres long, easy to hike and lead through forest and urban areas, as well as nature reserves. Avestaturen is an easy-to-cycle route through flat terrain. Another distance option is the 25-kilometre Besöksrundan, which starts and ends at Avesta Library and opened on 25 August 2026. There are different distances and activities to choose from: a loop featuring Döda Fallen, hiking stages, a cycling route and Besöksrundan. Conditions on the Älvpromenaden loop and Avestaturen may vary seasonally; both the season and the weather can affect trail conditions on Bruksleden.
