The naval town of Karlskrona, with its naval port, is the best-preserved and most complete of the European naval towns still in existence. King Karl XI decided to establish Sweden’s new naval base here; Karlskrona was founded in 1680. This connection between the town’s founding and maritime defence gives the destination a clear cultural focus. The Naval Museum, the history of Stumholmen and the ARK56 activities offer different perspectives on the town and its surroundings.

Naval history at the Naval Museum

The Naval Museum is Sweden’s national museum dedicated to the history of Swedish maritime defence from 1522 to the present day. Its broad time span offers a thematic introduction if you are interested in the development of maritime defence. Museum experiences include the Cold War-era submarine Neptun, which visitors can enter. Access to the submarine may vary depending on museum operations; bear this in mind when planning your visit.

The exhibition at Slup- och barkasskjulet offers a different perspective. It is part of the Naval Museum and focuses on historic naval sloops, launches and other smaller boats. The contrast between the Neptun submarine and the smaller naval boats draws attention to different aspects of maritime history. Exhibition content and seasonal access may change; check current information before your visit.

Stumholmen: from military area to civilian district

Stumholmen was a restricted military area for 300 years and was converted into a civilian part of Karlskrona in 1993. Alongside houses and workplaces by the water, there is also a bathing beach. Stumholmen therefore brings together several themes: the transformation of the district, work by the water and a place to swim. If you want to see Karlskrona through more than just its naval history, you’ll find another perspective on the town here.

The Royal Admiralty Church Ulrica Pia adds an architectural perspective to this focus. Dating from 1685, it is one of Sweden’s largest wooden churches. Its name, construction date and classification offer a specific point of interest if you are interested in Karlskrona’s architectural history as well as its maritime defence.

World Heritage and trails

Guided tours of the Karlskrona World Heritage Site explain why the town was added to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites in 1998. The tour broadens the focus from individual places to the question of what makes Karlskrona distinctive as a naval town. If this context matters to your trip, plan a tour and check the latest dates in advance.

Outdoor activities can also be a focus in their own right. The ARK56 network offers routes for kayaking, hiking and cycling in the Karlskrona area. Karlskrona (Stadsmarinan) is one of eight hubs along the ARK56 archipelago trail. The network crosses the Blekinge Arkipelag UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and runs along winding gravel paths, quiet bays, uninhabited islands and the open sea. This landscape description applies to the ARK56 network; it does not attribute each individual landscape feature to a section near Karlskrona. Routes and activities may change, so it is worth checking the latest information.

These activities offer different focuses without prescribing a set order or route. When planning, check in particular the dates of World Heritage tours, seasonal access to the boat exhibition, access to the submarine and current route details.
