The Hakgala Botanic Gardens offer a botanical perspective on Nuwara Eliya. They are located in the hill country among Sri Lanka’s tea plantations, in Nuwara Eliya District. Founded in 1861, they were established to experiment with and promote the cultivation of the cinchona tree in Sri Lanka. Alongside the garden landscape, visitors can also explore the site’s historical purpose.

From around mid-March to the end of April, the gardens are at their most spectacular, with annuals from temperate zones, roses and orchids in bloom. The timing may shift slightly depending on conditions. If the flowering season matters for your travel dates, check how it is progressing shortly before your visit. This lets you experience the gardens’ botanical highlights at their seasonal peak.

Park and Birdlife in the Centre

In the centre of Nuwara Eliya lies Victoria Park, a 27-acre ornamental park. Rare native and migratory bird species can be found there, including the Indian Blue Robin and Kashmir Fly Catcher. The park is also suitable for children to relax and play. This gives it a different focus from Hakgala: here, the emphasis is on the park and birdlife, while there, it is on garden plants and their seasonal blooms.

Discover a Waterfall and Tea

St. Clair’s Waterfall is over 80 metres high and 50 metres wide; it consists of the two waterfalls Maha Ella and Kuda Ella. It is visible from passing trains, and there is also a viewpoint just off the road. A small path through the St. Clair Tea Estate leads closer to the waterfall. However, access to the foot of the waterfall is prohibited. Check this restriction with the relevant authority before your visit.

A guided tour of the Damro Labookellie Tea Centre factory offers another perspective on the tea region. It covers the stages of tea processing: plucking, withering, rolling, fermenting, drying, and sorting or grading. The centre was formerly called Mackwoods Labookellie Tea Centre and is considered Sri Lanka’s oldest tea centre. The tour focuses on tea processing, while the centre’s name also points to its former name.

Nearby is Gregory Lake in Magastota, 1 kilometre from Nuwara Eliya. The lake was created in 1874 and covers 91 acres. Its location and size provide another point of reference in the surrounding area, alongside centrally located Victoria Park and the gardens in the district.

A Botanical Perspective on the Central Province

The Central Province also has its own botanical highlight: the Royal Botanic Gardens Peradeniya contain more than 4,000 plant species, including orchids, spice plants, medicinal plants and palms. They were founded in 1821. The Orchid House displays blooms of Cattleya, Dendrobium, Arachnis, Oncidium, Phalaenopsis and Vanda, as well as their hybrids. This allows visitors to compare Hakgala’s seasonal gardens with a different botanical profile within the Central Province: here, the blooms and the plant groups listed above take centre stage, while the emphasis there is on extensive species diversity and the orchid collection.
