Sri Lanka’s Central Province can be explored through a wide variety of discoveries: botanical collections, Buddhist sacred sites, and routes through mountain landscapes each offer a different focus. In Peradeniya, the Royal Botanic Gardens are home to more than 4,000 plant species. Orchids, spice and medicinal plants, and palms are part of the collection. The gardens were established in 1821; the Orchid House displays flowers from various groups, including Cattleya, Dendrobium, Arachnis, Oncidium, Phalaenopsis, and Vanda, as well as their hybrids.

Temples, Rituals, and History

In Kandy, the Kandy Dalada Perahera takes place every year during the Esala festival in July or August. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the specific festival dates in advance. Sri Dalada Maligawa is located in the ancient royal palace complex of Kandy. Natha Devalaya lies directly opposite and is considered the oldest building in old Kandy.

The Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple is an active Buddhist sacred site with five cave shrines. It has been associated with Buddhist ritual practice and pilgrimage for more than two millennia. The Museum of Wall Painting of the Central Cultural Fund is located on the grounds of Rangiri Dambulla Raja Maha Vihara; Sri Lankan cave and wall paintings can be seen there. Tradition associated with Dalada Maligawa relates that the Tooth Relic was brought to Sri Lanka from Kalinga in the 4th century AD.

Village Life and Trails in the Knuckles Area

Meemure is a traditional village in the Central Province, on the border between Kandy District and Matale District, surrounded by the Knuckles mountain range. Activities available there include birdwatching, cycling, mountain climbing, hiking, photography, and safaris. Traditional village crafts are also part of the character of the place: hospitality is still practiced, and household activities include weaving mats from rushes and making products from cane or rattan.

The Knuckles Mountain Range lies in Matale and Kandy districts and is part of the Central Highlands World Heritage Site. Its biodiversity includes 128 bird species, 20 amphibian species, 53 reptile species, 15 freshwater species, and 31 mammal species. A hike to Corbett’s Gap runs mostly along an abandoned jeep track through Knuckles Conservation Forest, which is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Deanston is another hiking destination in the Knuckles mountain range; the round-trip trail from there to its viewpoint is 3 km in total.

Highland Routes, Gardens, and Birdlife

Horton Plains National Park in Pattipola is a protected area in Sri Lanka’s central highlands. Its landscapes include montane grassland and cloud forest. The 9 km main route starts at the visitor center. The Kirigalpoththa Trail runs 7 km one way and takes approximately five and a half hours of trekking; conditions may vary seasonally. Check current trail conditions before planning your visit.

The Hanthana mountain range also offers plenty for nature enthusiasts: it has four trekking routes as well as approximately 120 bird species and about 95 butterfly species. Hakgala Gardens, established in 1861, is home to numerous rose varieties and orchid species; endemic bird species are regularly seen there. Victoria Park is a 27-acre ornamental park in central Nuwara Eliya. Rare resident and migratory bird species found there include the Indian Blue Robin and the Kashmir Flycatcher.

Other routes lead to striking viewpoints: from the summit of Alagalla Mountain, you can see Sri Lanka’s forested areas. To reach Balana Fortress, visitors leave the road and climb approximately 500 meters through a tea plantation. The fortress is associated with battles against European invaders during the era of the Kingdom of Kandy.

Tea as Cultural Heritage

Loolecondera Tea Estate is considered the birthplace of Ceylon Tea. You can also hike to Kondagala summit across the estate; from there, enjoy a 360-degree view of the surrounding area. A tea sample or tasting can be arranged on request at the Hanthana Tea Museum. In the Central Province, botanical collections, living religious traditions, village crafts, and hiking destinations offer a variety of reasons to put your own travel interests at the heart of your trip.
