Quartell lies between the foothills of the Sierra de Espadán and the Mediterranean Sea. Water shapes the landscape; citrus groves, vineyards and orchards dominate the fertile plain. The town offers several cultural points of interest to help you plan your visit: milling technology and water engineering, local festivals, and a connection to Joaquín Rodrigo.
Mills, Collections and Agriculture
The Molí Nou Watermill Museum preserves wooden machinery from wheat and rice mills. Its permanent exhibitions include topics such as rice cultivation, animal-drawn agricultural equipment, the municipal collection of weights and measures, and objects from traditional society. Its guiding theme is energy. As exhibitions may be updated over time, it is worth checking what is currently on offer before your visit.
A notable object at Molí Nou is the preserved 18th-century rice-mill wheel. Together with the machinery and the exhibition on rice cultivation, it draws attention to different aspects of milling history: technology, agricultural work and the use of water. The museum lets you consider specific equipment and topics side by side, rather than seeing mills only as individual structures.
Routes Through Water Engineering and Landscape
The Ruta de l’Aigua is a signposted route with information panels. They explain traditional water-engineering structures, including water dividers, irrigation channels and mills. The Sistar de Quartell, a 15th-century water-distribution building, is considered the largest water divider on the Ruta del Agua. Here, a specific structure meets the broader theme of water distribution.
Quartell is also included in the Camino del Cid’s “La Conquista de Valencia” hiking and mountain-biking routes. These route connections complement the water-engineering focus of the Ruta de l’Aigua, offering another way to include the town in an outdoor trip. Signage and trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.
Church and Religious Heritage
The parish church of Santa Ana was built in the 17th century in the Baroque style. Inside is an Ecce Homo attributed to Juan de Juanes. If you would like to see the work, check on site whether you can access the interior of the church. This allows you to consider the architecture and artwork as two distinct aspects of a possible visit, without assuming access at particular times.
Festivals Throughout the Year
Quartell’s patron-saint festivals honor Ángel Custodio and Santa Ana. The program includes processions, parades, open-air festivities, bous al carrer, concerts and fireworks; events may vary from year to year. The Plantà del Pi takes place on the first Friday of the patron-saint festivals: young people erect a large pine tree in the town hall square, followed by a Cordà. The exact festival date varies each year.
Holy Week also has its own event: a Passion of Christ performance featuring more than 100 local performers and natural settings throughout the town. If you want to visit Quartell for a particular festival, check the dates for your travel period. This lets you plan a trip around a specific event date.
Joaquín Rodrigo and Music
Joaquín Rodrigo visited Quartell repeatedly during his early years, playing there and walking through the town’s streets until his grandmother died. The Ruta Joaquín Rodrigo de Quartell has information panels that you can follow to learn more about the composer’s life and listen to parts of his music. Check the route signage and conditions before your trip.
The Joaquín Rodrigo International Guitar Festival has been held in Quartell since 2015. It offers masterclasses in classical guitar, flamenco guitar and flamenco dance. The instructors and dates vary with each edition. Unlike exploring the route by following its information panels, attending the festival depends especially on the specific dates of each edition, so check them before planning.
Nature in the Surrounding Area
The El Quadro wetland lies near Quartell. Visitors can observe birds, plants and other animals there. Check habitat conditions and access on site. Together with the water-shaped plain, El Quadro offers a nature experience distinct from the structures and cultural events described above.
