Loriguilla combines a distinctive local history with striking architectural and decorative details. The Embalse de Loriguilla reservoir, the Church of San Juan Bautista, the Ermita de la Soledad and the Masía del Conde offer different ways to explore the town’s history. For a culturally focused stay, you can choose between historical context, architecture and decorative design. If you’re looking for a hotel in Loriguilla, you can first consider which of these aspects you’d most like to shape your trip.
Local History and the New Site
The Embalse de Loriguilla reservoir was inaugurated on 27 November 1967 and has a maximum capacity of 71 cubic hectometres. In February 1968, 794 residents moved to the new site in the comarca of Camp de Túria, which at the time was part of the area of Riba-roja. The Church of San Juan Bautista was inaugurated on 1 March 1968, after the church in the old village had ceased operating and residents had moved from the Serranía to the comarca of Camp de Túria. The dates are close together, placing the relocation and the new parish church in the same phase of the town’s history.
Church, Ermita and Masía
The Church of San Juan Bautista, with its bell tower, occupies an area of 624 square metres at the highest point in the municipality. Its rationalist and functionalist style is typical of architecture from the Franco era. The church therefore offers two points of interest: its position within the municipality and its architectural classification.
The Ermita de la Soledad adds a building with a different scale and material character. It stands on a hill about one kilometre from Loriguilla, overlooking the ancient Visigothic archaeological site of Pla de Nadal. Its rectangular floor plan, plastered brickwork and carefully worked rubble masonry are among its key architectural details. The single-skin roof is covered with Arab tiles. A porch is supported by five masonry pillars that widen towards the bottom. You can appreciate the ermita both for its location and its construction.
The Masía del Conde offers a different perspective. Its entire interior features multicoloured tiles with geometric and Orientalist designs, made in the kilns of Manises and hand-painted. On the north side of the courtyard were an oil mill and vessels used for wine production. In contrast with the ermita, the focus here is not only on the building itself, but also on its decorative design and traces of agricultural processing.
Planning Excursions
The map of Loriguilla’s former municipal area includes marked routes, photographs of places and information useful to visitors on excursions. It brings together route guidance, visual points of reference and supplementary information. You can use these details together as you plan, to choose places of interest and routes. As route conditions can change, check the route and conditions for your chosen trail before setting out.
