La Cuevarruz offers two distinct ways to explore: local history and trails through varied landscapes. The provincial catalogue for cultural protection, published on 16 April 2025, lists the village as a “Núcleo Histórico Tradicional.” Route descriptions mention juniper forests, fields, abandoned settlements and geological formations.

Local history in specific details

The Ermita de San José houses a Baroque carving attributed to Ignacio de Vergara. Local arrangements may be needed to access the interior. An old iron windmill stands at the entrance to the village; it is privately owned and currently out of operation. Beside the Fuente-abrevadero is a small pelota court dating from 1866.

These buildings offer different points of interest: the notable detail about the Ermita is the attribution of the carving, while the pelota court is distinguished by its precise construction date. The windmill, in turn, is defined by its described condition and private ownership. This brings the cultural focus into view through specific details, rather than treating the buildings as interchangeable stops.

Cueva Negra is designated as a noteworthy natural area in Cuevarruz. Alongside local history, nature is therefore also a focus, without requiring a particular access route.

Routes between the juniper forest and the ravine

The GR 37 E04 stage runs from La Yesa to La Torre through La Cuevarruz and Casas de Arriba, as well as through impressive juniper forests. In the quality inspection recorded on the route page in September 2025, it was rated “condicionado” due to deficiencies in the trail markings and, in some sections, route continuity. Until the deficiencies are remedied, following the route particularly carefully was recommended.

The route from La Cuevarruz to La Torre passes through the juniper forest and by fields of grain and almond trees, as well as the abandoned settlements of Pozo Marín and Cañada Pastores, before reaching La Torre. Part of this route is shared with the PR-CV331, the Sendero de las Travinas. If you do not want to cover the whole distance, the section between La Cuevarruz and La Torre is also offered as one of three shorter routes.

A 12.94 km circular route from La Cuevarruz leads to the Sancho geodetic summit at 1,512 m and passes Charca la SerranĂa and the Barranco de Virgen. The descriptions offer different points of reference when choosing a route: for this loop, the distance and elevation are specified, while the route to La Torre is characterised, among other things, by fields and abandoned settlements. You can therefore choose based on the stated distance or the landscape features described.

Another circular route passes through the Barranco de las Cuevas del Agua, which is noted for its geological formations and rugged landscapes. Weather events can change conditions in the ravine. The route and the Cueva Negra natural area are different landscape options to consider when planning; the detailed route descriptions can help you choose the focus you want.
