Guadasequies brings together architectural and art history, festival traditions and country trails. Its attractions range from a neoclassical parish church dating from the early 18th century to a church built between 1996 and 2000. There are also works of art from different eras, recurring festivals and trails through surroundings shaped by orchards and old farmhouses. This gives you the flexibility to plan your stay around a variety of interests rather than focusing on just one theme.

Churches and art across several centuries

The Parish Church of Our Lady of Hope is a neoclassical building dating from the early 18th century and is classified as a Bien de Relevancia Local (BRL), or Asset of Local Relevance. The former church houses a local museum and a collection of liturgical objects. A more recent building is the new Church of Our Lady of Hope: built between 1996 and 2000, it is decorated inside with colourful stained-glass windows and houses the Marian image “Esperança nova” by sculptor Damià Pastor. A replica of Roderic d’Osona’s Gothic panel “San Miguel de Guadasséquies” can also be seen in the Church of Our Lady of Hope.

The Hermitage of Christ of Amparo was built in the early 20th century in the higher part of the town. It contains a Baroque painting of Christ of Amparo dating from the mid-18th century. The Calvary, a cypress garden dating from 1906, is also in the upper part of town. Sacred art here spans the period from the Baroque painting of Christ of Amparo to the more recent works in the new church.

Festivals and local cuisine

The main patron-saint festivals take place in the second week of August in honour of Sant Roc, Our Lady of Hope and Christ of Amparo; the exact dates may vary from year to year. The Moors and Christians festival is celebrated on the first weekend of August. The Entrada de Moros i Cristians takes place on Saturday. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the exact dates for that year.

The feast of Our Lady of Hope is celebrated on 18 December. It includes a large bonfire beside the old church, followed by a communal torrà dinner around the fire. Sant Antoni Abat also has a set place in the calendar: the festival falls on the weekend closest to 17 January. The programme includes a large bonfire, a communal dinner, a procession, the blessing of animals and children's games. The programme for the feast of Our Lady of Hope may vary, so it is also worth checking the plans for that year.

Among the most representative dishes of the local cuisine are puchero and a cazuela baked in the oven with rice, beans and turnips. These culinary traditions complement the festivals and church customs, offering another way to experience the town.

Bellús Reservoir, valley views and trails

Part of Guadasequies was flooded by what is now the Bellús Reservoir. Beside the former church is a recreation area overlooking the reservoir; in the upper part of the town, a viewpoint offers views across the valley. The lake therefore shapes not only the present-day views but also the history of the town.

Country trails run through Guadasequies among springs, old farmhouses and orchards. They are suitable for hiking and cycling on unpaved paths. The Route of the Four Villages of the River connects Guadasequies with Alfarrasí, Sempere and Benissuera and is considered easy to moderate. It offers a different way to explore the area than the individual trails through the countryside.

The GR 160 E12 reaches Guadasequies from Bellús and leaves the town along an unpaved path parallel to the road towards Sempere. Guadasequies is also listed as a stop on the 270.74-kilometre Xàtiva–Biar stage of the La Defensa del Sur route. These details distinguish a specific route through the town from its mention on a longer stage.
