The Fosa de Chera is a geological depression more than 1,000 metres deep and covering 60 square kilometres. Rugged peaks surround Chera, reaching heights of up to 1,176 metres. These figures give the landscape a distinct geological character that can be explored along trails and at viewpoints.

Geology and viewpoints

The Chera Geological Park has seven trails, 24 information panels and 30 viewpoints; all the trails are fully signposted. Chera is also home to the Mirador del Pico Ropé, at one of the highest points in the area. On a clear day, the view from there reaches as far as the sea.

Chera-Sot de Chera Natural Park lies within the municipal boundaries of Chera and Sot de Chera. Another feature of the landscape is the Río Reatillo: along much of its course through uninhabited areas, it carries clear, transparent water. Water conditions can vary with the seasons.

Hiking trails and navigation

Chera has several officially certified hiking trails with information and markers along the way. These include short-distance PR trails and a local SL trail. In Chera-Sot de Chera Natural Park, hiking and climbing are among the outdoor recreational activities given particular consideration. When planning, the specific route matters: as conditions on individual routes can change, check their current status before setting out.

The Centro de Divulgación Cultural del Parque Geológico is the starting point for seven field excursions. It features a collection of fossils and minerals, as well as models and explanatory panels about the Geological Park. The excursions are complemented by exhibits that explore the area's geological theme.

Buildings and local history

The buildings also offer a cultural point of interest. Chera Castle dates from the 12th century and stands on a hill. Casa del Conde dates from the late 16th century, while the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles is a 19th-century church. The dates span the 12th to the 19th centuries, placing the three buildings in their respective historical periods.

Festivals and cuisine

The patron saint festivities include a fancy-dress and floats parade featuring the festival queens and participants, followed by a paella competition involving the whole village. The specific festival programme may vary from year to year.

Traditional Chera cuisine includes Olla Cherana, Ajoarriero and Migas Ruleras, as well as dishes made with pork and pork products. Beekeeping also has a long tradition in Chera that continues to this day. Honey is used in sweet treats such as Migas Dulces, Turroncillo and honey rolls.
