Rice mills dating from different centuries, a protected church and traces of historic routes give Benetússer a distinctive cultural identity. The town’s history is about more than individual buildings: the waterways of the Acequia Favara and local festival traditions are part of it, too.

Local History and Waterways

The Museu Història de Benetússer is a public municipal museum and is open to the public. Check access before your visit. The Acequia Favara offers another perspective on local history: its various branches irrigate the plain, run beneath the fully built-up town centre and carry their water to the Albufera. These connections to water add the irrigation history of the surrounding area to the view offered by the visible buildings.

Churches, Gates and Rice Mills

The Iglesia Parroquial Nuestra Señora del Socorro is an example of Catholic religious architecture in the Comunitat Valenciana and is currently classified as a building with comprehensive protection under urban planning regulations. It is also one of the town’s sights. The Mannerist Puerta de Favara recalls a different architectural history: it once formed the entrance to the gardens of a palace that has since disappeared.

The rice mills span the period from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The Molí de Benetússer dates from the Middle Ages, probably the early 14th century. The Molí de Favara, a 17th-century rice mill, houses the Museu Arqueològic, with a permanent exhibition. The Molino Arrocero de la Estación was added in 1921. It consists of a three-storey rice mill and two adjoining, symmetrically designed sections. The present building is a Neo-Gothic brick structure; the rear may contain elements dating from the 14th century. Together, these buildings reveal different periods and uses, and their histories are not confined to a single era.

Historic Routes and Pilgrimage Connections

Within the municipality, the former royal road from Madrid to Valencia, the Camí Nou, follows the same route as the Vía Augusta. Today, the road is called Avenida del Camí Nou. Benetússer’s historic location on the royal road from Xàtiva, or along the route connecting Valencia and Madrid, also helped ensure good road and rail connections. Check the relevant connections and timetables for your specific journey.

The Camino de Santiago de Levante is a different route: it begins in Valencia, and the first stage from Valencia to Algemesí includes a stop at the Iglesia Parroquial Nuestra Señora del Socorro. The area’s landscape history also includes livestock trails that cross the municipality: the Vereda del Cementerio de Valencia, which follows the old road from Picasent, as well as the Colada del Azagador de Alfafar and the Colada del Azagador de l’Orba. These route connections place Benetússer in various historical contexts, from the royal road to the pilgrimage route.

Fallas and Local Festival Traditions

During Fallas, Benetússer’s streets fill with music, fire and colour; the Cremà takes place on 19 March. La Pasión has a performance tradition dating back to 1949 and has been recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Provincial since 1967. Scenes from the last days of Jesus’s life are performed outdoors in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the Plaza de la Iglesia and Calle Mayor. Residents, volunteers and amateur performers take part. Check dates and details of the production before your trip.

The Corpus Christi celebrations traditionally take place on the first Sunday of the Fiestas Mayores, with numerous local institutions and associations taking part. The programme for the 2026 Festes Majors also included a celebration marking the 45th anniversary of the Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos. This deeply rooted tradition brought the streets to life with music, colour, festive clothing and a celebratory atmosphere.
