A stay in Onda can be shaped around several very different highlights: the protected historic town centre, a reconstructed prison cell, a Tile Museum with around 80,000 objects, or activities at the Sichar Reservoir. There are also annual events and a challenging hiking route. Before choosing your accommodation, you can decide whether culture, a particular event date, or nature and outdoor activities will be the main focus of your stay.
Historic town centre and Torre de la Presó
Onda’s historic town centre is protected as a historic-artistic ensemble and an asset of special cultural interest. Its many narrow streets and squares convey the city’s medieval character. Its cultural heritage encompasses civil, religious and military aspects; the protected designations apply to the historic centre.
The Torre de la Presó retains the character of a historic prison tower and is one of the few surviving examples of this building type in the Comunitat Valenciana. It is considered an exceptional example there. A reconstructed prison cell from the 17th and 18th centuries lets visitors learn about the conditions of confinement at the time. The tower thus connects the history of a distinctive building type with a specific historical perspective.
Fira d’Onda and the annual pilgrimage
The Fira d’Onda takes place every year in the historic centre and includes religious, cultural, taurine and entertainment events. It attracts thousands of people each year; the exact programme varies from year to year. If you are travelling for specific events, check the dates for the relevant year rather than assuming the schedule is always the same.
A pilgrimage to the Santísimo Salvador hermitage also takes place every year on 5 August. Related activities and transport arrangements may vary. The date provides a fixed point for planning the year; do not assume that other offerings associated with the pilgrimage are identical every year.
Sichar Reservoir and hiking route
Sichar Reservoir is a natural area within the municipality of Onda. Walking and mountain biking are possible there. Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding are also available at the reservoir. Water conditions and operational access may vary seasonally, so do not plan on these watersports being available at all times.
Another option for an active day is the PR-CV 360 “Onda – Las Pirámides – Onda” route. It is classified as a difficult hiking route, is 16.8 kilometres long and has an estimated walking time of 4 hours and 30 minutes. Unlike the activities mentioned at the reservoir, this hike has a specified difficulty level, distance and walking time. This makes it easier to estimate how much time you will need if you plan the route as a main activity.
Tile collection and local history
Onda’s Tile Museum has around 80,000 objects dating from the classical era to the present day. These include tile collections from the 19th and 20th centuries, industrial-ethnological objects and more recent documentary series. The collection therefore ranges from historic tiles to industrial and documentary items.
In the entrance tunnel of Cova de l’Algepsar, a permanent exhibition explores events in local history. It provides another local-history focus alongside the Tile Museum’s collection.
Practical information
One of the tourist information offices in Onda is “TOURIST INFO ONDA-CASTILLO”. Check the tourist information office’s current service details before your trip. If you are staying around the Fira or the pilgrimage, check the relevant event dates too; for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, take seasonal variations in water conditions and operational access into account.
