In Les Coves De Vinromà, different chapters of architectural history meet routes through agriculturally shaped landscapes. Churches, a fortified house and a museum give concrete form to the area’s cultural highlights. The routes, by contrast, offer different options: would you like to travel on foot or by mountain bike, experience a seasonal bloom, or choose a route whose destination is a group of mills?

Churches and Architectural History

Construction of the Iglesia Parroquial de la Asunción began in the late 18th century to replace the earlier church. The building combines elements of late Baroque and academic Neoclassicism. It also preserves a collection of goldsmith’s work and liturgical vestments.

The Ermita del Cristo del Calvario presents a different form of sacred architecture: its chapel has an octagonal floor plan. Inside are five frescoes by Joaquín Oliet, dating from 1809 to 1810. A cypress-lined path leads to the ermita. Stations of the Cross stand in chapel-like structures decorated with tiles from Alcora.

The Ermita de Sant Vicent was built in the early 17th century; the year 1614 is inscribed on the building. It is located beside the Mas dels Arcs path and the old Roman road. Renovation work created a recreational area around the building.

Castle Entrance, Former Mosque and Mortar Museum

The Casa Fortificada de los Templarios is also known as La Casa del Temple and is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural. It was associated with knights of the military order. As a fortified residence, it features defensive elements and has a distinctly military character.

The Portalet is the only surviving entrance to the castle. The Iglesia Vieja de los Desamparados was originally an Arab mosque. Mortars are the focus of the Museu Almirez: housed in a three-storey building, the museum displays pieces for industrial, culinary, decorative and other purposes.

Landscape and Routes

The Barranc de la Valltorta runs through the municipalities of Tírig, Albocàsser and Les Coves. It has been a World Heritage Site since 1998. La Morería is a plant micro-reserve beside the river; old hydraulic mills have also been preserved there.

The routes vary in activity and landscape. The Ruta dels Garrofers is designed primarily for mountain biking, but can also be covered on foot. It passes through landscapes characterized by carob trees. The Ruta dels Ametlers runs through agricultural landscapes with strong color contrasts. During the bloom in the second half of January and the first half of February, almond blossoms color the fields; the timing can vary slightly from year to year.

The Ruta dels Molins is about 12 kilometers long and has a low difficulty level. It follows the San Miguel River and leads to traditional grain mills. Unlike the other two routes described, it is not signposted; cleaning and maintenance work is also underway. Check conditions before hiking. The routes offer clear differences for visitors choosing according to their interests: the Garrofers route combines mountain biking and walking with carob landscapes, the Ametlers route is connected to the seasonal almond blossom, and the Molins route leads to traditional mills.
