San Miguel de Salinas offers several ways to explore, from a distinctive building tradition and traces of older cultures to landscapes and routes. When planning your trip, you can choose the themes that interest you most. If you are mainly looking for architectural history, you will find striking examples in the town; if you prefer being outdoors, you can follow the routes described here and explore the natural surroundings.

Architectural history and cultural heritage

The Iglesia dedicada a San Miguel Arcángel is located in Plaza de la Libertad. The Casa Lo Meca offers a different picture of rural architecture: the building dates from the late 18th century and is arranged around a central courtyard. Inside, the rooms used by the owners were distinct from those used by people employed on the estate. A typical farmhouse of the dryland region, Casa Lo Meca has a wine cellar and an oil mill. Its courtyard, layout, and agricultural facilities offer a tangible example of how living and working on an estate were brought together in one space.

A particularly distinctive local building tradition is that of the Casas Cueva, which have cultural and ethnological significance. In the catalogue of protected assets and spaces, they are listed as Pueblo Troglodítico I and II. Archaeological remains also form part of San Miguel de Salinas’s cultural heritage: they represent successive cultures, including the Iberian, Roman, and Arab. These different traces range from a building form still visible today to evidence of settlement from the distant past.

Other notable buildings include two windmills in different states of preservation. The Molino de Viento del Marqués is a cylindrical stone structure in an elevated location, offering wide-ranging views. At the Molino de la Tía Pelá, only the millstones remain. The mill is classified as a Bien de Relevancia Local; its local classification was mentioned in an official BOE resolution in 2023. Together with Casa Lo Meca and the Casas Cueva, these buildings are a highlight for anyone looking to combine architecture and local history on their trip.

Landscapes and routes

A dense Aleppo pine forest surrounds San Miguel de Salinas. The area also includes scrubland and places where thyme grows. Wildlife in these natural surroundings includes red-legged partridges, turtle doves, eagle owls, common buzzards, and collared doves; mammals mentioned include weasels, rabbits, and foxes. This list describes the wildlife of the area and does not guarantee that you will see any of these animals during a visit.

For scenic views, the Ruta Miradores del BalcĂłn de la Costa is one option: it leads to viewpoints with unique panoramas across the Vega Baja. The V Circular a Rebate cycle route offers a different experience, taking you over the Rebate mountain pass. The two route names therefore represent different focuses: viewpoints on the one hand, and a mountain-pass crossing by bike on the other. Check the current availability of these routes before planning your trip.

San Miguel de Salinas is also included in the official Ruta 15: De Orihuela a Elx. The route is themed “Salt flats, dunes, and monumental cities.” For a playful way to explore the town, there is the San Miguel pueblo de cuentos route, where you look for hidden fairy-tale characters on the façades of houses and buildings. You can do it with family or friends and in any order you like. This means a themed official route and a flexible search through the townscape offer two different ways to explore.

Traditions and cuisine

The IV. Jornadas “Somos Campo de Salinas” celebrate local traditions, gastronomy, history, and agricultural culture. They bring together several themes that also shape the character of the surrounding area. Check the dates and programme for the relevant year.

Traditional dishes from the area around San Miguel de Salinas include Gazpacho manchego, Cocido con pelotas, rice with rabbit, Arroz con costra, and gazpacho with partridge and hare. Arroz con costra is particularly associated with the Vega Baja del Segura. If regional cuisine is important to your travel plans, this selection offers an overview of traditional dishes from the area; it does not describe the menu of any particular restaurant.

These highlights can help you explore San Miguel de Salinas according to your interests, without combining the different experiences into a set itinerary.
