Rojales brings together unusual cave architecture, museums devoted to everyday and natural history, and historic waterworks. Parque El Recorral offers a green counterpoint. When planning your trip, you can choose what to see based on your interests: Cuevas del Rodeo and the Ecomuseo offer insights into housing and crafts, the Museo de la Huerta into work and everyday life, while the waterworks and park reveal other sides of the town.

Cuevas del Rodeo and Crafts

The Cuevas del Rodeo complex marks the southern edge of Rojales. Its underground residential area, with caves and cave houses, was excavated mainly between the 18th century and the first decades of the 20th century. This means that the form of housing itself is part of the town’s history: Cuevas del Rodeo represents not just a single building, but an underground residential district whose development spanned several generations.

At the Ecomuseo del Hábitat Subterráneo near Cuevas del Rodeo, cave architecture meets craftsmanship. The complex includes 15 craft workshops, exhibition spaces and the Zoco Artesanal. Its program includes courses, extracurricular activities, fairs and exhibitions focused on crafts and skilled trades. Practical and cultural topics thus complement the history of underground living. Visitors exploring Rojales through its crafts will find a different focus here than in a collection devoted primarily to objects from everyday life.

Museums of the Huerta, Everyday Life and Fossils

The Museo de la Huerta showcases traditional work in the Huerta and craft activities. Other topics include household objects, traditional means of transport, crockery, and equipment for oxen and other draft animals. Oil and the grain cycle are also part of the exhibition. Its broad scope ranges from work and production to transport and household life: the museum therefore focuses on different aspects of daily life and the traditional world of work.

The Museo Arqueológico y Paleontológico Municipal offers a different perspective on time and is located in Rojales’s former town hall. The municipal Archaeological Museum was founded in 1981. Its paleontological section includes fossils of marine mammals from the Miocene. While the Museo de la Huerta focuses on activities, tools and everyday objects, this museum reaches far back into the history of the Earth.

Waterworks and Local History

The Segura River and the fertile soils irrigated by its waters have shaped the historical development of Rojales. Its technical heritage includes a hydraulic complex with a weir, sluice gates for irrigation channels and a water wheel. The complex also includes a stone bridge dating from the 16th to the 18th century. Together, these structures illustrate various elements of water management, from regulation and irrigation to crossing the river.

The windmill El molino de viento is another historic structure. It was built in the 18th century and restored in 1998 with reconstructed traditional machinery and gears. The Aljibes de Gasparito provide another example of water technology: built in 1922, this hydraulic system extends across the entire Cabezo del Molino and is used to collect rainwater. It includes two long, open irrigation channels or supply ditches. The windmill and the Aljibes differ in function and building history, but both offer a glimpse of historic technical installations in Rojales.

The parish church of San Pedro Apóstol is also part of the town’s history. It was rebuilt in an eclectic style. Together with the waterworks and museums, it broadens the picture of Rojales beyond caves and collections, without requiring a focus on any one period.

A Green Getaway and Visitor Information

If you would like to spend some time outdoors as well as visiting museums and historic buildings, Parque El Recorral offers a different kind of outing. The park is densely covered with Aleppo pines and is suitable for trips and picnics. Rojales therefore offers a green escape alongside its cultural attractions; there is no need to link the individual sites into a set walking route.

For visitor information, the Rojales tourist office offers comprehensive information about the municipality and the wider region. This can be helpful if you would like to combine the local attractions with a broader look at the surrounding area.
