When planning a stay in Punta Prima, you can distinguish between several coastal features: the natural sandy beach, the promenade with sea views, which can be explored on foot, and the linear municipal Route 03. Each appeals to different interests—time at the beach, a walk by the sea or a route passing through several named places. The history of the former Carabineros barracks adds a military-history perspective on Punta Prima to these themes.
Beach, Access and Services
Punta Prima beach is a natural beach with golden sand. Its main access is via the N-332 Alicante–Cartagena road. Beach services include walkways, maritime surveillance, toilets, a restaurant and easier access for people with reduced mobility; these services may vary seasonally. If a particular service is important for your visit, check its status for your planned dates. A lift makes it easier for people with reduced mobility to access the beach. If you rely on the lift, check its current operating status before your visit.
The beach has been awarded the Blue Flag, ISO 9001, Q de Calidad TurĂstica and ISO 14001. As certification status can change, check its current status if these labels are important to your decision.
Coastal Scenery and Walk
On a broader landscape scale, the coastal stretch from Punta Prima to Cabo Peñas is characterised by medium-height cliffs, with deposits of material in the area. This coastal landscape offers a different perspective from the individual sandy beach: the cliffs and deposits define the named stretch, while Punta Prima beach is described as a natural beach with golden sand.
Punta Prima’s promenade can be explored on foot and offers sea views. It is one way to take in the coast on a walk. The municipal Route 03, by contrast, is a linear coastal route passing through several places. It starts at the car park in the Mil Palmeras residential area and runs through Mil Palmeras, Campoamor, Cabo Roig, La Zenia and Punta Prima. The promenade walk and the route therefore differ both in form and in their geographical orientation.
Conditions on Route 03 may vary; parking arrangements at the starting point may also change. Before setting out, check the current route conditions and parking situation at the starting point. The car park in Mil Palmeras is the named starting point, while Punta Prima appears as one of the places along the route in the sequence described.
Historical Coastal Use
The former Carabineros barracks in Punta Prima was built in the 19th century to control coastal smuggling. An air-raid shelter was built later; the barracks and shelter were subsequently used to establish an anti-aircraft battery as part of the coastal defence plan of the Cartagena naval base. During the Spanish Civil War, a detachment of Artillery Regiment No. 3 from Cartagena was stationed at these facilities. This chronology distinguishes the barracks’ original purpose from the later use of both facilities and their use as quarters during the war.
