Two historic windmills, a hiking route of about two hours, and a longer cycling route give trip planning around Muntanya de la Sella a clear focus: milling technology, the Miquelet, and the riuraus of Pedreguer. The routes differ both in mode of transport and length—a useful guide when planning your days around your own interests.
Els Molinets: Windmills with a history
Els Molinets are two windmills in the valley between La Sella and the mountain of Pedreguer. Their power was once used to grind grain and produce flour; both buildings were constructed in 1850. Their shape is distinctive: circular, slightly truncated-cone-shaped stone structures with walls more than 1.5 meters thick. Their specific former use and massive construction make the windmills a vivid subject for a cultural heritage stop. The interior fittings that had been lost were restored in 2016 to ensure their preservation.
The Molinets can currently be visited inside. You can get the key from the local police or the cultural center; an identity document must be left as a deposit. Before your visit, check whether the key is available and what requirements apply to the identity document.
Hiking to the Miquelet
The Els Molinets i el Miquelet de la Sella route is six kilometers long, takes about two hours, and is rated easy. It climbs to the Miquelet de la Sella and then descends along the slope facing the sea to the La Sella development. The hike therefore follows a clear course: an ascent followed by a descent to the development. The approximate duration and route length provide a guide for planning your day; conditions on the route may change, so check them before setting out.
Cycling to the Riuraus
The Ruta dels Riuraus offers a different perspective: a 14.3-kilometer cycling route through the municipal area and over Muntanya de la Sella. It passes several riuraus in the municipality of Pedreguer and draws attention to the arcaded houses characteristic of Pedreguer. Compared with the hiking route, the two routes offer different scales: the cycling route is more than twice as long and has a different focus from the path to the Miquelet. The cultural heritage also differs: here, the focus is on the arcaded houses; there, on the windmills and their former function.
Visit the garden in Pedreguer
The Jardí Mediterrani de l'Albarda is located in Pedreguer. It was established in 1990 on the initiative of the Fundació Enrique Montoliu (FUNDEM) and is managed according to strict sustainability criteria. It covers about 50,000 square meters, and its botanical collection features more than 700 native plant species, as well as extensive rose and palm collections. The garden is open to the public daily. Guided visits for groups of ten or more must be booked in advance. As visiting arrangements may change, it is worth checking the opening hours ahead of time.
When looking for a hotel in Muntanya de la Sella, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: the windmills and the hike to the Miquelet, the cycling route with the riuraus, or a visit to the garden in Pedreguer.
