Granja De Rocamora combines an environment shaped by Huerta farmland and Mediterranean flora with religious traditions reflected in its churches, festivals and pilgrimage routes. The municipality covers 7.2 km². For your visit, scenic paths and the calendar of local customs offer two different ways to experience the area: the “La Huerta de la Vega” route passes traditional irrigation structures, while the Camino del Lignum Crucis draws on the veneration of the relic of the Cross.
Huerta Landscape and Routes
The “La Huerta de la Vega” route begins at the Ermita de la SantĂsima Cruz and passes the Iglesia de San Pedro ApĂłstol. Along the way, it follows traditional irrigation structures in the Vega Baja, including norias, acequias and azarbes. At the CV-900, it joins the cycle path and continues into the Huerta of the Vega Baja del Segura. Along this route, sacred landmarks, historic irrigation structures and the landscape come together.
The Camino del Lignum Crucis offers a different perspective and begins in Granja De Rocamora. It connects places and churches where a fragment of the Cross of Christ is venerated. The Itinerario de los Cabezos adds an environmental dimension, with outdoor activities, hiking, routes and group outings. It includes experiences of the landscape and access to the Cabezos as part of Granja De Rocamora’s historic cultural heritage. The routes therefore have different focuses: religious tradition on the Camino, the irrigation landscape on the Huerta route, and rural cultural heritage on the Itinerario de los Cabezos.
Ermita, Church and Festivities
The Ermita SantĂsima Cruz is a religious place of worship. The current building is the third to have been built on the same site; it dates from 1971 and was renovated in 1996. A splinter relic of the Holy Cross is kept in the Ermita. The Iglesia de San Pedro ApĂłstol stands out for its central dome. Former altarpiece paintings are now displayed individually at various locations inside the church. Its construction history spans from the laying of the first cornerstone on 29 August 1748 to the completion of the work and inauguration on 28 July 1775.
The Fiestas Mayores de la SantĂsima Cruz take place from 30 April to 3 May and include the veneration of a Lignum Crucis relic. On 3 May, the relic is carried in procession to the Ermita de la Santa Cruz, where the “BendiciĂłn de los Aires” takes place. If you would like to plan your trip around these festivities, check the programme for the year you wish to visit. Religious traditions also form part of the annual calendar at other times of the year: on the four Sundays in October, the Auroros of the Virgen del Rosario hold nighttime singing processions. Holy Week also includes the annual performance of the “SermĂłn de las 7 Palabras” by local residents, in collaboration with the church.
Visits and Cultural Interests
The Museo Etnográfico La SantĂsima Cruz is intended for visits by school groups and people interested in ethnography. Check in advance whether a visit is possible. The Granja Escuela “La Viña” lies outside the town in a Huerta landscape and welcomes school groups for educational and environmental activities. These offerings are intended for group visits and give a stay a different focus from walks through the landscape.
The Torre Mora is about 200 metres from the town, on the road towards San Isidro de Albatera. If you are considering a visit, check local access arrangements beforehand. This allows you to distinguish this historic landmark from the routes and religious sites described above, without assuming that a visit is possible.
Local Cuisine
Local dishes include “Arroz a la Granjera,” made with rice, broad beans, artichokes and anchovies. Traditional local desserts include Tortas de calabaza, Tortas “escaldadas” and “Orejetas.” These dishes add a culinary dimension to the area’s cultural and landscape attractions, without requiring a separate programme or a specific restaurant visit.
