Discover Biar from three perspectives: its castle and architectural history, local traditions, and trails through wooded mountain areas. These differences help you tailor your stay to your interests and the time available. If you’re looking for a hotel, first decide whether you want to focus on cultural walks, scheduled events or longer hikes.

Castle, Architectural History and Ceramic-Making Tradition

Castillo de Biar dates back to the 12th century and preserves an Almohad vault from the same period. The museum display, which opened in 2024, includes four themed areas, information panels, explanatory models and a viewing platform. The castle brings together historic architecture and a contemporary interpretation of its history.

Other buildings also reflect different architectural periods. Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción combines an original Renaissance phase of construction from the 15th and 16th centuries with Baroque additions dating from the end of the 17th century. Santuario de Biar has three naves; the central nave features ribbed vaults decorated with stucco and frescoes. These details invite you to look closely at the architectural forms and decoration, rather than considering the different sites solely in terms of their age.

The Museo Etnográfico Municipal Miguel Maestre Castelló focuses on Biar’s cultural heritage, traditions and crafts. Pottery and the production of glazed ceramics feature prominently. The collection comprises more than 1,000 objects, including both displayed pieces and items in storage. The museum complements the architectural history with a look at local craft traditions.

Another example of historic stone construction is the Acueducto Medieval, built in 1490. It has three arches: two pointed arches and one flattened round arch. You can see the aqueduct on a hiking route through the natural landscape around Biar. The Ruta de los Arcos also includes the Arco de Jesús, a stone arch dating from the 13th century.

Hiking Trails and Routes by Duration

The mountainous areas around Biar are largely wooded and offer opportunities for outdoor sports, enjoying the scenery and hikes accessible from the town. Fontanella, Reconco and Penya Tallà are popular with visitors and easy to reach from the town centre. Reconco de Biar is designated a micro-reserve and is home to numerous plant species typical of the Mediterranean landscape.

The stated durations of the hikes can help you plan your day. The urban section of the Ruta de las Ermitas is described as a 40-minute walk and leads to the hermitages of San Ramón, San Roque and Loreto. The complete Ruta de las Ermitas is listed as taking two and a half hours. The same route name therefore offers a shorter urban section and a longer hike.

The Ruta de las Fuentes passes through the old town and its surroundings, covers about four to five kilometres and visits 15 fountains. Its stated total duration of two hours assumes a stop of approximately five minutes at each fountain. For a longer circular hike, the PRV-155 Sierra del Frare is a 13.8-kilometre route. It is listed as taking three hours and 40 minutes and having a moderate difficulty level. The length, duration and difficulty given here refer specifically to this route; you can use the different details for each trail to plan your time.

Traditions and Guided Cultural Walks

The events calendar offers different ways to experience Biar throughout the year. The Moros y Cristianos festival takes place every May and features music, arquebus firing, and parades by brass bands and Comparsas. The Medio Año Festero falls on the first weekend of November and includes communal dinners and social activities. If you’re travelling for a festival, check the exact event dates.

In January, dances known as “Balls de Jesús” or “Volteta de la Reina” take place. Since their revival in 2017, they have been a public, participatory event. Together with the festivals in May and November, they form a calendar of local traditions spread throughout the year, with dates you can take into account when planning your trip.

Biar offers guided cultural walks through the old town on Sundays. The walks visit small hermitages and a snow well. Booking is required, participation is free, and availability depends on the minimum group size. Check the booking conditions in advance if you’re planning this guided introduction to the old town.
