Those who explore Gata De Gorgos through its cultural and landscape highlights will find striking contrasts: Art al Vent brings contemporary textile art together with the local tradition of hanging quilts from balconies. Mills, raisin-drying floors and historic buildings offer insights into craftsmanship and agriculture. The walking routes also differ considerably: Els Molins is a two-kilometre circular route, while the PR-CV 412 Font de la Mata route follows unpaved paths. This lets you choose your focus—exhibitions, history or landscapes.

Textile Art and Craftsmanship

Art al Vent is an open-air textile art exhibition in Gata de Gorgos, held regularly in July. It brings contemporary works together with the custom of hanging quilts from balconies. Hundreds of visitors attend the exhibition each year. During the event, concerts, conferences and recitals also complement the programme; the individual offerings vary from one edition to the next. Check the dates of the relevant exhibition when planning your visit.

The exhibition route runs from Calle Duquesa de Almodóvar along Calle la Bassa to Plaza de España. There you will find shops selling handcrafted items. As the route can change between editions, it is advisable to check its current layout before your visit.

The Museu Solerbags also focuses on local craftsmanship. It displays historic machines, catalogues and designs, and an audio guide explains the development of the family business and its products. The story dates back to the company’s founding in 1880. Check the visitor arrangements locally. The CM Museu Arqueològic i Etnogràfic de Gata de Gorgos offers a different chronological and thematic focus: its collection includes fossils and ethnological materials from various periods and cultures, from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages. The museum was established through donations from people in the La Marina Alta region who are passionate about history, art and culture.

Mills, Buildings and Agriculture

Els Molins combines a two-kilometre circular route with information panels explaining how the mills worked. Two 19th-century grain mills can be seen here. They were built from stone from the Tossal, lime mortar and tuff ashlar; one of the mills bears the date 1839. The panels give the route a specific historical focus.

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Miguel Arcángel was built by the II Conde de Alcúdia and his wife. Its simple, elegant Baroque façade and three-part bell tower with a clock and bells define the church’s architecture. The long construction history of the Ermita del Santísimo Cristo del Calvario can be traced through its dates: work began in 1762 and was not completed until 1905. That year, the bell tower and the Stations of the Cross chapels were added. The Ermita stands on the hill of the Tossalet.

Agricultural history is also evident in the 19th-century raisin-drying floors found at several sites in Gata de Gorgos, including Serrillar, Tossal del Moro and Font de la Mata. At Assagador del Serrillar, floors for untreated and already blanched raisins have been preserved. The floors for untreated raisins face south and are made of dry-stacked tuff. These details show how processing and construction methods came together on the land.

Font de la Mata and Landscape Routes

Font de la Mata is laid out as a recreational area and is used by people from Gata de Gorgos and the surrounding area for Easter outings. The stone fountain dates back to a well built by the Arabs for agricultural water use. Above it, two monumental mastic trees (Pistacia lentiscus) of exceptional size grow among the rocks.

The PR-CV 412 Font de la Mata route starts in parc del Raval, near the església de sant Miquel. After crossing a river, it follows unpaved paths to mas de les Mallades, near Font de la Mata. This route differs from the shorter Els Molins circuit; no walking time or difficulty level is specified here for the PR-CV route. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting off.

Other landscape highlights can be found at a range of locations and along different routes: Les Coves Roges (Cuevas Rojas) are intensely red geological formations by the Gorgos River, where rock art has been found. Several climbing routes have been established there. The second stage of the GR 330 Costa Blanca Interior crosses the Serra de Seldetes and offers views of surrounding mountain ranges such as the MontgĂł. This selection ranges from geological formations to a longer long-distance hiking trail, without linking the two into a single walk.
