Along the RĂo VinalopĂł, the paper mills of Banyeres de Mariola tell the story of an industrial past intertwined with mountain scenery, museums and festival traditions. The town lies in the mountains and is part of the Parc Natural de la Serra de Mariola. Aromatic herbs and the special importance of water shape the landscape. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: nature and trails, architectural and industrial history, or an insight into local cuisine and customs.

Mills, River Scenery and Trails

The Ruta dels Molins links three of the most significant paper mills among the nine that operated along the Río Vinalopó between the 18th and 20th centuries. The route follows the river through a landscape rich in flora and fauna that has remained largely unchanged. Here, the mills and river are part of a shared history: water is both a feature of the landscape and a reminder of the area’s former paper industry. If you are interested in this connection, the route offers a view of both the industrial heritage and the surroundings of the Vinalopó.

PRCV-4 is another of the area’s marked trails. This short-distance hiking trail is internationally certified and marked with parallel yellow and white stripes. The Via Verde de Las Virtudes offers a different perspective on the area: it runs through the municipality between Bocairent and Beneixama. Banyeres de Mariola railway station is at kilometre 27.33; from there, a branch leads to the cigarette paper factory in l’Estació. The trails and locations have different points of focus—from the river and mills to the connection between the route, railway station and industrial history.

A viewpoint near the Monumento de San Jordi opens up views of the mountains and the municipality’s natural surroundings. The Torre del Homenaje in the Castillo de Banyeres de Mariola also offers sweeping views: from the top, visitors can see four provinces—Albacete, Murcia, Alicante and Valencia.

Castle, Museums and Architectural History

The Castillo de Banyeres de Mariola is a polygonal Almohad castle complex dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. The Museu Fester is housed in its Torre del Homenaje. Its exhibition panels explain the history of the Moros i Cristians festival in Banyeres de Mariola and the events held during the four-day celebration. In this same building, the history of the castle meets the story of an important local festival.

Below the Castillo, the Monumento de San Jordi commemorates the former site of the Ermita del Conjurador. This hermitage was traditionally associated with protection from storms and other misfortunes. Another glimpse into the past awaits at the Museu Arqueològic Torre Font Bona: housed in a 15th-century tower, it displays archaeological remains from the Paleolithic to the modern era. The collection’s long time span makes the museum a different way to explore history from the exhibitions focused on the castle and festival traditions.

The Museu de la Farmàcia focuses on historical pharmaceutical equipment and the functions of the characteristic areas of a pharmacy, including the sales counter, back room and chemical laboratory. The Museu de la Paraula preserves, displays and shares cultural heritage. To explore the local architecture, the Iglesia de Santa María and the Ermita de Santa María Magdalena are also part of the townscape: the church combines neoclassical design and a Latin-cross floor plan with a Baroque façade and a communion chapel redesigned in the Byzantine style in the 19th century. The Ermita is considered the oldest surviving hermitage in Banyeres de Mariola and is built in the rural Gothic style.

Festivals and Local Cuisine

The Moros i Cristians festival in honour of Sant Jordi takes place from 22 to 25 April and has been recognised as a festival of national tourist interest since 1988. The programme includes informal nighttime parades. On 24 April, the castle is symbolically captured by the Moors and then recaptured by the Christians, with ceremonial speeches accompanying the scene. The exhibition at the Museu Fester provides a historical context, while the festival itself brings the events to life throughout the town.

In July, masses, Correfocs and processions in honour of the Ermita de Santa María Magdalena take place. The cuisine also gives Banyeres de Mariola its own distinctive character: traditional dishes include Olla de penques, borra, Gaspatxo and Pericana, along with almond and anise pastries. Herbero is the town’s distinctive traditional spirit, made with anise and aromatic herbs. Alongside its landscape and buildings, local food and products offer another focus for discovering the town.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

If you would like to focus on trails and scenery, the river route, protected mountain landscape and viewpoints offer different ways to experience the natural surroundings. For a cultural and historical focus, you can explore the castle and museums together: some offer insights into papermaking and archaeological periods, while others cover festival history, pharmacy and architectural styles. Local dishes and Herbero add the culinary side of Banyeres de Mariola to these themes. When searching for a hotel, choose the town as a base for the interests that will shape your trip; you can then plan your visits around the time you have available.
