A snow house at 1,220 metres, routes to historic buildings and a micro-route to a fountain and washhouse give Agres several distinct ways to explore its culture and landscape. When planning your trip, you can choose between different themes: snow houses and local history, routes with various stops, and nature experiences that depend on rainfall.

Snow Houses and Religious Sites

Cava Gran d’Agres is in Agres, in the Serra de Mariola in the Comtat, at an altitude of 1,220 metres. It was built in the 17th century and operated commercially in its entirety until 1906. As a snow-house structure, it is considered an emblematic example of this type of building and a landmark of the Serra de Mariola Natural Park. Anyone interested in the history of the snow trade will find here a tangible link between a historic building and its former commercial use.

Religious buildings also shape the history of the area. The Santuario de la Virgen del Castillo is located within the Sierra Mariola and its natural park. The origins of the Iglesia Parroquial de San Miguel date back almost to the time of the Christian conquest. As early as the first half of the 14th century, the parish priest of Agres took part in diocesan synods in Valencia. The 18th- and 19th-century religious ceramic altarpieces known as Els Taulellets have been preserved in the streets and at the Santuario. The area’s religious history thus spans from early church connections to artworks that survive to this day.

Other cultural highlights include the Torre Atalaya, which is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) under the Second Additional Provision of Law 16/1985, and Cueva Beneito. It is one of the archaeological sites in Agres where evidence of human presence dating from the Palaeolithic to the Neolithic has been found. These places offer different historical perspectives for your trip, from early human life to later architectural and religious heritage.

Routes with Different Themes

The A la sombra de las cavas route begins at the Convento de Agres recreation area. After a short climb, it reaches the foot of the sanctuary and passes close to Cava del tejo, which dates from the 18th century. The route combines a short climb with stops around the sanctuary and the snow house.

The Fonts d’Agres micro-route is a little over 1.5 kilometres long and runs through Agres. It starts at the Convent or the Santuario de la Mare de Déu del Castell and includes the Font de l’Assut and a washhouse. The routes therefore differ in their listed stops: one focuses on Cava del tejo and the area around the sanctuary, while the other features fountains and water infrastructure. The Ruta de los neveros de Mariola also leads to Cava Gran, offering another way to visit this snow house.

Water, Cuisine and August Events

Many water sources in Agres are fed by springs in the Sierra Mariola Natural Park. After heavy rainfall, visitors can see waterfalls at Les Jordanes and MolĂ MatĂł. Rainfall is an important factor when planning your trip: this nature experience specifically depends on substantial rainfall and should not be treated as an attraction that is always available.

Typical dishes in Agres include pericana, arroz caldoso, gazpachos, borreta and stuffed peppers. If you would like to plan your trip around a cultural event: since 2016, the Representació de l’Aparició de la Mare de Déu d’Agres has been held in Agres on the last Friday and Saturday in August.
