Macisvenda combines access to the natural area of the Río Chícamo with local traces of history and festival culture. The Mirador de Macisvenda is located in the town. This gives you different options for planning your visit: the river landscape, historic sites, or a visit during one of the local festivals.
Río Chícamo: protected area and directions
The Río Chícamo is designated a Site of Community Importance (LIC). It is one of 135 river nature reserves designated in Spain and the only river nature reserve in the Región de Murcia. The Río Chícamo includes a stretch of river that flows year-round, connected rambla systems, and wetlands. The natural area therefore covers more than the river channel alone.
Macisvenda is one of the access points to the Río Chícamo area. To visit the spring, take the A-9 country road. The route passes through El Partidor, El Tollé, and La Umbría; after the Macisvenda crossroads, continue toward El Cantón as far as the hamlet of Chícamo. From there, a dirt track leads to the spring. The route therefore first follows the country road and then a dirt track. Road and track conditions may change; check them before setting out.
Church, festivals, and viewpoint
The Iglesia San Juan Bautista in Macisvenda was built at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1996, it became independent of the Barinas parish. These details record the church’s construction and its later ecclesiastical independence as two distinct stages in the town’s history.
Macisvenda celebrates its patron saint’s festival on August 29. In June, a small pilgrimage traditionally organized by the town’s hunters takes place. During the pilgrimage, San Juan Bautista is carried to a spring of underground waters. The two events take place in different months and have different forms. If you would like to experience the pilgrimage, ask locally about current participation arrangements.
The monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Macisvenda was built in 1995. A viewpoint was built on the hill with the monument, offering views of the town’s landscape. Check locally how to access the viewpoint.
Nature or culture: different ways to plan your visit
The different planning considerations can help you choose the purpose of your trip: for a visit to the spring, take the route and the conditions on the road and dirt track into account. Local culture centers on the church’s history, the monument, and festival dates. An event may shape your plans in June or August; for a nature visit, the route to the spring is the main consideration. This way, you can choose Macisvenda based on what interests you most, without treating a nature outing and a festival visit as the same kind of occasion.
