At the Urdax Monastery Museum, the history of the town and its connection to the Camino de Santiago are brought to life. Outside, medieval bridges, houses decorated with coats of arms and a historic mill tell further chapters of the town’s story. You can also choose from a range of hiking trails to plan your visit—from a section of the Camino de Santiago Baztanés to a circular route through meadows and forests.
Monastery Museum and Townscape
Audiovisual displays and exhibition panels at the Monastery Museum present the town’s history and Urdax’s connection to the Camino de Santiago. The surviving church and cloister of the former monastery, together with other parts of the complex, make up the Monastery Museum and an art exhibition. Exhibition details may change.
Several medieval stone bridges cross the River Ugarana, which flows through Urdax. The streets also tell the story of the town: they are lined with houses decorated with coats of arms, built by emigrants who returned from America. They had prospered there during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The Mill and the History of Technology
Visitors can see the mill in Urdax in operation: water powers the large millstones used to produce wheat and corn flour. The mill was rebuilt in the 18th century after repeated looting and fires. A visit to the mill also includes a former power station, which supplied electricity to Urdax and Ainhoa from 1901 until the 1960s. If you are planning a guided tour, check the visiting arrangements in advance.
Hiking Trails with Different Routes
The section of the Camino de Santiago Baztanés from Urdazubi/Urdax to Amaiur/Maya is 13.28 km long and described as a linear hiking route of moderate difficulty, with an elevation change of 566 m. Trail conditions may vary seasonally, so it is advisable to check conditions before setting out. The 12 km Sendero de los contrabandistas, also known as the Sendero de las cuevas, follows a different route: it is a circular trail marked with painted horses and passes through meadows and forests. Their lengths and route types offer a concrete comparison, although the routes do not thereby become a single combined hike.
Another hiking route starts at the village square in Urdazubi and returns to Urdazubi via Axular, Berroberria and Argandoita. It passes places around the birthplace of the Basque writer Pedro Dagerre Axular. The trail therefore has its own connection to the town’s literary history; it is also described by its starting point and the named places along the way.
Urdax Caves
During guided tours of the Ikaburu Caves, carefully adjusted lighting is used to highlight the formations and explain the cave’s history. Check the tour dates before your visit.
The Urdazubi/Urdax Caves are in the hamlet of Leorlas. A paved road leads to the entrance, and there is a car park nearby. Check road conditions and parking availability before setting off.
