If you are considering a trip to Epároz, you can combine architectural and art history with walking and landscapes. Cultural highlights include the late Romanesque Basilica of Santa Fe, the monumental complex of Santa Fe de Epároz and the Church of San Andrés; the Foz de Ugarrón is nearby. For planning, a simple choice can help: would you like to focus mainly on buildings and religious art, or also include a walk?

Santa Fe: Monastic Heritage and Architectural Features

The Basilica of Santa Fe in Epároz is considered one of the finest examples of late Romanesque architecture in Navarre. Santa Fe de Epároz appears to have been founded in the late 12th century by monks from Sainte Foi de Conques in France. The monastery is part of the Monastery Route in Navarre; the monumental complex of Santa Fe de Epároz is designated by the Government of Navarre as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural).

A distinctive architectural feature of the complex is the hórreo, a granary dating from the 15th century. It has a square floor plan and stands on twelve stone pillars. Religious dues were stored here, mainly wheat, barley and beans. Its construction and former use can be considered together through this building: the supports hold up the granary, while the recorded provisions make its function tangible.

Access to the cloister and hórreo at Santa Fe is free. Nevertheless, check the visiting conditions again before travelling. The Santa Fe de Baratzagaitz complex is also near Epároz. It includes a carefully restored early Gothic church with a cloister added in the 17th century.

San Andrés and Religious Art

The Church of San Andrés de Epároz dates from the late 12th or early 13th century. It was extensively remodelled and retains its original chancel. Its nave is single-aisled; the chancel has a flat end and a pointed barrel vault. “Single-aisled” describes a main space without side aisles, while “barrel vault” refers to the shape of the ceiling. These architectural features give the church a different profile from the late Romanesque Basilica of Santa Fe.

San Andrés preserves two 14th-century Gothic figures of the Virgin Mary, a 15th-century silver processional cross and a 16th-century pyx. The figures of the Virgin came from the abandoned Church of Santa Fe. The parish church of Epároz also houses a Gothic Madonna and Child inspired by the titular figure of the collegiate church of Roncesvalles. A Baroque sculpted altarpiece highlights the church’s titular figure. Its sacristy also preserves a portrait of Blessed Esteban de Adoáin, painted by Javier Ciga.

Walks and Landscapes

The Foz de Ugarrón is a 104-hectare natural area near Epároz. A walking trail runs along the left-hand cliff there. The approach to Santa Fe also passes through a valley with an uneven terrain. Along the way, views open up towards Peña Izaga or the Sierra de Leyre, as well as distant Pyrenean peaks; vultures can also be seen in the area. These varied landscapes complement the town’s architectural and artistic attractions.

The route through Urraúl Alto can be divided into two shorter walks via the road between Epároz and Irurozqui. It passes behind the Church of Epároz, through a metal gate into the village, and then past the house “Etxeko” below the cemetery. If you plan to use these directions, check trail conditions and local wayfinding before setting out, as both can change.

Planning Your Visit and Stay

Santa Fe is accessible via the road connecting Aoiz and Lumbier. You can park at the Santa Fe turn-off; alternatively, a short track leads to an open area beside the monumental complex. As access and parking conditions can change, check locally before your visit. The walking and cultural highlights mentioned here can help you decide, when looking for a hotel in Epároz, whether to focus your stay on architectural history, religious art or extra time on the trails.
